Hey, I like Scandie (though I've never been there). I really enjoyed Wallender (with subtitles) and The Killing (original version) was ace.

I like snow as well. So there.

Having visited Oslo twice, the affluence of the country is conspicuous. All the bits of public space and infrastructure that you interact with on a daily basis - roads, pavements, street furniture, public buildings, public transport, shops, etc. It all just feels like it's been properly funded and someone has spent money on buying the best. There are very few scruffy bits, but at the same time, there isn't that shut-off feeling that you get in the expensive bits of London. I think it helps that Norway is mostly a suburban city* so the pressure that London's infrastructure is under just doesn't exist. The proximity to stunning landscape is also something that even those living in the Surrey stockbroker belt don't get.

That said, it is eye-wateringly expensive to even buy a sandwich for lunch, let alone go out for dinner. Elk is very nice, though.

*the city centre is very small, and you can get on the tube in the centre of the city with a pair of skis, and get off at the end of the line (at the top of a small mountain), drop your skis on the platform, clip in and ski off into the wilderness.

Much as I love the model and I enjoy spending time with mates in both Finland and Sweden, not of my mates in those countries are beginning to think that their economic models are not sustainable. Norway may be the exception since, afaik, their government has not spent a single Krone of their North Sea oil revenues and instead is living off the interest of loaning it to the likes of us.

I don't think the issue of sustainability of the model is exclusive to the nordic model. The models in the rest of Europe (even the rest of the developed world) is hardly considered sustainable by anyone. The UK too.

It's nearer the mark than the UK is.

I'm glad I only travel there on business - the Norwegian national bank is one of our clients.

Decided to go out for a curry one night in central Oslo - equivalent of £50 for a starter, curry, rice, Nan and two beers!!!

I think the UK, and indeed my life, would benefit from a Scandinavian style tax and spend policy.

So yes, I probably wouldn't mind paying more > as part of a proper tax and spend system.

But I'm a bleeding heart lefty liberal.

Genuine question (I'm too lazy to look it up, and it will only make me angry if I do): how is a Scandie tax & spend policy different to the Gordon Brown tax & spend policy? Do we have to cut our Defence spending and armed forces to Scandie levels to make it work?

    Cos, y'know, GB's effort wasn't such a big success...

Phewm I didn't understand what the Scandie system was but didn't want to admit it for fear of appearing dumb. No need now.

    Anyway.

I'm not so sure that Tax and Spend is truly a liberal-socialist (left) concept. Progressive tax certainly isn't.

Lets deal with Left sided tax policy first (we'll deal with spending later)

If this was about fairness and equality and all men being equal then we would all be taxed the same percentage but those who earn more pay more. A national flat tax rate. The fact that progressive tax exists is to keep the disgruntled and yet equally greedy 'Great unwashed' happy with the fact that there are people who have more than they do. Let's bottom line this. Progressive Tax is about keeping the poor's greed and selfishness in check. Ironically when those poor people earn more to warrant higher tax rate they don't like it - I.e. Adele.

In a true Communist state people wouldn't just be taxed the same they'd be paid the same so in a truly socialist, liberal or left society people would earn different amounts but be taxed the same.

In a Right or Tory driven Society then progressive tax reigns.

I just don't buy this I'm a Leftie "Progressive 50% tax bollocks". It's counterintuitive capitalist principle.

    Left and Right sided spendingp

The Left spends on Public provisions but at the same time wants to retain a greater degree of control on how things are run.,

The Right spends less on Public provisions and doesn't want to retain control on the running of things. But will retain ownership so that it makes more money.

Now then, this Scandie Tax I think should or could work if everyone was taxed the same percentage.

    You choose:
Scandie version with a flat tax:
Build a block of flats for some poor folks who get benefits? Sure they're taxed 27% just like me.

    Or the UK version:
Build a block of flats for some poor folks who aren't even taxed or taxed half of what I am and then get housing, job seekers, food benefits. While I'm taxed 40-50% get no benefit and encouraged to pay for private schooling and health services to relieve the burden on a society I massively contribute to? F-right off.

I would argue that the Scandie's poor middle and rich have invested more time, money and value in their society and therefore are happy to take and give things to said society even if they don't directly benefit, they can see the overall benefit - getting tramps off the streets.

The problem is investment in society, it's not equal and equality isn't just found in money.

    Vote DDD.

Oh yeah, I love going over there and would think about migrating, if I had the balls to. I'd certainly not knock back the chance to live there for a few years if someone offered it to me. I was just pointing out that it's likely to change, but knowing the Scandinavians they are likely to be very pragmatic about it, and other sweeping generalisations as well.

On the subject of sweeping generalisation I must say that most of the Scandinavians I've worked with don't exactly work their fingers to the bone and don't show much in the way of initiative when it comes to looking for things to do or making improvements.

Given we both spend our working hours on an internet forum, I'm not sure we're particularly in a position to comment on that.

I work smart so I don't have to work hard (most of the time). My wild dismissal of a whole swath of Europe as lacking in initiative at work still stands based entirely upon my limited experience.
