Powertap newbie

So...... my Powertap (Elite+) arrive this morning and whilst I know a little bit about it from what I have read, I wondered if there we're some newbie suggestions that you guys may have. It's paired with a Garmin 705 btw. Obvious questions are:
- Should I just go out and ride for a few weeks and build up some data?
- on the 705, what displays are the best i.e 3 second sampling? or instant?
- Is WKO+ worth it over Golden Cheetah?
Any more suggestions you have would be much appreciated.
Thanks

1.Yes. It's not a bad idea to gather some data about the way you have been typically riding. In that way you might learn more about what's good and not so good about your own training habits.
2. 3 second rolling average power for the display, for various reasons, but especially so for a Powertap. You may even want 5 seconds.
3. That depends on a few things, so hard to say. I prefer WKO+ but GC is fine software.
4. Get this book:

It will help greatly to have goals. Why do you have a Powertap?
Once you know why you have one and what you are training for, you can start to use the PT correctly to achieve those goals.0 -

On the 705, Set data recording to every second amd set zero averaging on.
I have read that firmware 3.3 is buggy with a power tap, so I have stayed with 3.1
Even if just riding, it's worth entering a figure for FTP in wko so that you can start to see the pmc build up, etc0 -

Get GC while you're getting used to the Powertap. If you feel it's lacking get WKO+. I just use GC and it's fine for me.
Get the book detailed above and get some good workouts for the long dark winter nights on the Turbo!0
