Is Mom in BMW X5 or White Van Man cycling public enemy #1 ?

I was out on a nice wee ride today , 54 miles that took me 2 hrs 53 mins , a fair bit of it was on busy roads with lots of impatient saturday traffic. It got me thinking whilst I was spinning merrily away, which classification of driver is public enemy #1 to the cyclist ?

Now ive never had any time for women drivers at all , short-sighted horses wearing blinkers would drive better , and the school run moms in X5`s, well they are just abysmal. White Van Man tends to be an arrogant and impatient caveman on the road whose driving etiquette is just atrocious to any road user in front of him.

Both are absolutely criminal on the road, both are a huge risk to cyclists ,both wont give the biker an inch and both will get involved in screaming matches with a cyclist at the drop of a hat.

But which one of the two is the cyclists public enemy #1 ?

I know bus drivers and taxi drivers dont give the cyclist an earthly either, but lets keep it to X5 Mom and White Van Man and see how it goes, might be interesting.

  • In my experience bad drivers come in all shapes and sizes and in all sorts of vehicles so can't categorise that one particular group is better or worse than any other. On balance I tend to find younger drivers generally are the most impatient but not always.

Lets face it - the culture in the UK regarding road etiquette has cyclists pretty much at the bottom of the pile.

dont agree with that, the younger driver is all about showing off to their mates or winding windows down to whistle at girls with big boobs as they are driving past. i dont find them nearly as intolerant as the mom or wvm.

Stereotypical rants based on hearsay help no-one. Let's be objective and consider that road users come from diverse backgrounds and may be subject to stresses that make them undertake manoeuvres that may expose us to additional danger. Live and let live I say.

BUT, women in X5s. On the phone...

  • I've found any type of person in any type of car can be a liability. Be it the fat boy shouting at me to get off the road the other day, or the nice lady swerving into the bike lane to undertake a car turning right, or the yoof in the saxo who likes to get real close, they're all capable of being d1cks.

Old people are the worst though, through my experience.

Bad driving is bad driving end of the day, be it in a car,van or on a push bike.

You should see the amount of numpty's I have to deal with day in day out on my 30 minute commute, if it's not vehicle drivers not giving way on round-abouts it's the no idea cyclists coming out of side roads without stopping or looking what's coming.

And then I have to put up with it all day as well when I get in my white van

    It's 'Mum' not 'Mom'.

My vote is for Londoners. Everyone in a car there seemed determined to kill me. After a 9-month stint in that town I was glad to get back to Gloucestershire I can tell you.

Unless that is a deliberate act of trolling, I'd suggest that anyone who posts like the above is actually the afore mentioned type.

Nope, not a deliberate act of trolling, I was just having a bit of rage as yet another member of our crew has been damaged on the road and I was pi$$ed off. I'm sick to the back teeth of agressive, incompetent or dangerous drivers. If I had my way I'd have a groove cut in the middle of each lane and everyone would be forced to drive at 30mph in Scalextric cars.

    Rant over

Women. Every time. They even look straight through you (after checking the rear-view mirror) when they make a 'mistake'.

Doesn't matter what they drive or who they are there seems to be a general lack of awareness out on the roads, either accidental or deliberate. The big worry is the lack of realisation of the consequences of an accident. For them it's a scratch on the body work and the loss of their NCB, for us it's a bodybag.
BTW if I had my way mobile phones should be blocked from operating in cars and only those that can show a true need for sat navs should be allowed to have them(delivery drivers, fireman etc)
  • The cyclists public enemy #1 ? I would say there are plenty of contenders but my pet hate is "moms" in people carriers. I just don't understand why it seems so necessary for parents to transport their mini humans in such large vehicles, especially when they can't drive, manoeuvre and park the bloody things.
