Where do you stand on the use of the term derailleur then??

No issue, as that's what it's called, English or French, unless you want to use the engineering definition "a mechanism for changing gear on bicycles, consisting of a device that lifts the driving chain from one sprocket wheel to another of different size"

If you really wanted to, you could use derailer, but that's derived from the action, which is what the French name is derived from.

Basically, that's it's name, not a French version of the same word in English.

Exactly the same, Peloton is the name for the pack of cyclists, it's not a translation.

Again, there's no direct translation, the above are names, although I suppose you could use 'Betrothed' instead of Fiance

But bidon has been adopted into English too, meaning a cyclist's water bottle. The direct translation of bidon to English is 'can'. If I said "I'm going to have a bidon of lager", that'd be pretentious, but as I was referring to a cyclist's water bottle - no foul!.

Try going into Halfords and asking for a bidon though, and watch the blank look on the shop monkey's face

He'd probably say "We don't have one mate, you'll have to use toilet paper like everybody else".

Of all the pointless arguments that have ever been on the Internet, I think this has to be up there with the best of 'em.
  • I tend to go through phases of buying a load of stuff, then buying nothing and being a skin flint.

Just spent £500 on new brakes, wheels and cassette

Went mad over the last two weeks ...

It started on a Saturday morning at Enigma cycles, Echo frame, carbon forkmand headset.

Since then it has been Campag Super Record Groupset (39/53 and 12/29), Tune Kom Vor saddle, Mig and Mag hubs and stem, Enve 45 clincher rims, New Ultimate carbon bar and seat post, Speedplay pedals !!! Just waiting for the hubs to arrive then it's game on :-)

I wouldn't mind but I've only just finished building a Singular Gryphon with some sweet components too.

I'll get some pics up once it is finished.

Matters not. Socks for cycling should, without exception, be white.

  • Would rather listen to him than.being told what I can and cant wear. Thay stopped for me at the age of about 15.

Any, this isnt a thread about liking/disliking black/grey/pink/white/whatever-other-colour-it-is-deemed-ok to wear

You can wear what you like, but I'm just letting you know that you'll look crap if you do. And Shimano shoes? Jesus. Is there some charity to which I can donate that aims to alleviate this kind of inhuman poverty?
  • I dont think there is, instead you could just piss off and stop boring me with your valuable opinion and what I should and shouldnt spend my money on

I'm sorry, I just can't sleep with people only being able to afford Shimano shoes. Screw those kids in Africa, someone get the Red Cross involved FFS
