for people training using plans in which they aim work at set heart rate zones. which hrms do you use? I'm looking for one which allows the user to manually set quite a few zones (ideally 7-8, minimum 5), and which for a given workout will provide info about how long i spent in each zone. Any recommendations, or advice on how others monitor their time in training zones, would be appreciated,
thanks,

I use a Garmin 705 but it's a bit more than an HRM and an expensive bit of kit if all you want is HRM + zones.0

thanks for the help bronzie, i've got an edge 500. what software do you use to set each of the zones - as far as I know you can't do it with garmin connect - i think you specify one number and it sets the zones for you (which isn't really what i'm after). I'd like to be able to set the limits for each zone myself, if you know what i mean. Do you use training centre then? I'll have to look into that.
Saying all that, surely there must be a more basic hrm with this function - loads of folk must train with zones in mind.0 -
You can set the zones manually in Garmin Connect and have as many as you want. Have you actually looked at Garmin Connect cos if you had it should be pretty obvious you can do this?
Personally I have never set up zones on my Garmin. I have displayed HR%max in the past and it doesn't take long to remember what percentage corresponds with a given zone.More problems but still living....0 -
Suunto t3. 5 zones. average for each intervall and total time in zone etc. Comfy chest belt. self change batteries.0

I use WKO+ software as I'm normally working with power data, but tend to keep a note of time in HR zone for those rides without a powermeter (turbo, MTB, fixed, race wheels etc).0

You'll soon find out that Friel's zones 5a, 5b & 5c are a bit dubious when doing short high intensity intervals. HR lag makes trying to get sensible "time in zone" for these sessions pointless. Perhaps better to look at anything above LTHR as zone 5 and leave it at that.0 -
amaferanga, yeah, i use garmin connect quite a lot and have tried to do this. perhaps i'm a bit dim, but it wasn't that obvious to me. thanks for the advice, i'll look again. I'm just seeing what options there are, as the HRM part of my edge 500 has just gone to pot. And i was deciding whether to replace the strap or not - or get another hrm (it would be used for other sports too).
Ut_och-cykla - ta, i'll have a look at that Suunto
Bronzie - ta, haven't heard of WKO+, but will have a look0
