It's a personal thing anyway. Pads closer together should make your frontal area smaller and more aero. Wider will be more comfy and open your chest up a bit more making breathing easier.
Just do what feels comfortable. Move them apart in small increments until you get a position you like. There's no hard and fast rules.0
