Those brakes are good, and I like the look of the matte black frame, should be a very nice build.

I've had Avid Juicy 5's and Shimano XT and never felt comfortable with the braking power on offer although have good feel and modulation, also got Hayes HFX-9 HD's which ooze on power, but lack on modulation so I'm hoping after reading reviews the Formula's will be powerful and well modulated!

    ...

After a very quick think about the headset, I have decided to go for a Hope Pick'n'mix (cost £27 per cup from The Bike Chain)

Comparing that to On-One's in house smoothie maker headset its a no brainer really; £54 for a proven Hope headset or £45 for something made by On-One who aren't exactly known for their quality headset components!

For anyone wanting an alternative to On-One's smoothie mixer headset for the Carbon 456 and using a standard 1 1/8th fork steerer, you need to get Hope Headset cups 2 (top) and D (bottom)...

Looks like it's shaping up to be a nice build. Like the wheel choice, should be nice & burly although I found XC-width bars a bit narrow for this bike. That seatpost is a top bargain on CRC, I bought one for my missus' bike..

I have this frame and I got it with the On One headset. I wasn't sure about the reducer race and it did come loose after the first ride. I tightened it and it hasn't come loose again.

I would contact Hope about the headset. I did and the bottom cup they recomend isn't type E. Can't remember what one it was but it was a full 1.5' with the reducer race (I thought type E would be right) and not on that chart. You can get them on Evans though as I had a look.

Good luck with the build. Looks like it will be pretty good.

To be honest, I never considered the On-One smoothie maker headset; especially after reading more bad reviews than good; your experience is typical of the review's I've read. I'm more than happy to pay an extra £9 for the Hope headset over the On-One.

The Hope Headset cups don't need to be messed around with, you simply press the cups into the frame and your done; no messing, just a hassle free headset and (in general) you know you get quality with Hope.

I'm thinking of getting the Hope bottom cup and reducer myself. There apears to be nothing wrong with the On One one now but it didn't fill me with confidence. And with the pick and mix being just a little more I don't see why you wouldn't go for it. The Hope reducer race also looks as if it will insert about the depth of the bearing which the On One one doesn't. You'll have to report back on how it is when you get it.

I'll take & upload some photos of the headset assembly when I come to fit it; should be a doddle to fit...

If your interested, here's a link for the cheapest place I found the bottom cup D (although I got their last one in stock):

Purchased a very bright "trail light" (can't really use it on-road as it's way too bright) for a bargain price of £95...

Looking forward to seeing this finished. Would have liked the matt finish too but they only had gloss black when I ordered.

Once I get the bike built up, I'll let you know how I get on with the Hope headset... Should be a hassle free"fit and forget" product like most Hope stuff is.

Seatpost arrived today and very impressed with the finish and build quality :) superb value for £25... Feels very light

I have the same frame and seat post. Gonna be starting my build over the next month. Yours is gonna be a tad higher spec than mine,

Still looking forward to it though. Can't wait to get out and ride it.
Out with the old, in with the new here.
  • Finally the frame has arrived :)

Can't believe how light it is!

Will build the bike up tonight, looking forward to a good ride at the weekend....
  • Turns out On-One have sent me the wrong bolts for the "swap out" dropouts...

    2011-09-01%25252010.46.44.jpg

 maybe I won't be going for a ride this weekend.... Just got off the phone to On-One who are going to ship out the correct bolts today; hopefully they'll arrive tomorrow... Fingers crossed

    Scary isn't it!

    Hopefully your bolts arrive tomorrow.

  • Your dropouts are different to mine. Mine aren't threaded, just straight through and use a male / female bolt like a chainring bolt.

Yep... They sent me the bolts for your style frame (which are too skinny to fit into the threads on my frame) rather than the bolts for my frame... idiots!

Hopefully they'll arrive tomorrow and all will be sorted :)

    In the meantime, started assembly...

Annoyingly I can't fit the rear wheel till the dropout bolts arrive tomorrow (hopefully)... Kind of gives an idea of how it will look when finished....

Yeah, the first time I saw them a couple of years ago I was like "buy it now"... Have a spare in the garage just in case one breaks, although I can't see it happening easily; they're 40mm wide!

Built the frame up as much as would allow (without having the rear dropouts) last night and I'm very pleased with the result...

    download.jpg

I'm super annoyed with On-One and those bolts.... Just checked my account status this morning (via the on-one website) to find:

    Order Id: XXXXXXXX
    Order Date 01/09/2011
Status: Preparing to be shipped - Your order is ready to be shipped

Considering I rang them at 10am yesterday to tell them they shipped me the wrong dropout bolts and the On-One employee told me on the phone he'd get the right bolts shipped that day so they'd be here today

Hopefully they'll arrive today, but I'm not holding any hopes....

EDIT New "Swap Out" dropout bolts have arrived today :) Obviously they don't always update their website for non-tracked orders... Either way, bike will be finished today :)
  • Cool looking bike and colour scheme. Are you gonna carry on with the Green for cables and stuff or stealth it up a bit!

Nope, I've seen a few bikes with colour coded cable outers and I'm not really a fan, I prefer the good old black cable outers.... However, I've got some ideas about getting some custom decals made up for the frame but not decided either way yet so I'll see how it goes...
  • An idea for a frame decal (I'm not a fan of the official On-One 456 carbon decals)... I designed this based this on the Spank font...

Have a few variations on the colour, these are my current favourites...

    on_one_frame_logo_green.jpg

    on_one_frame_logo_blue2.jpg

    Any thoughts?
  • I would leave the frame bare, that's what I've done. Not a fn of the decals but that's just my preference

Managed to finish building the bike at the weekend and took it out for a quick spin but haven't had time to do any decent off road rides... Going up to Thetford tomorrow evening for a spot of night riding so should be very interesting....

    download.jpg

Very impressed with the quality of the frame and the geometry seems to be spot on... Looking forward to a good ride tomorrow evening
  • That is one sweet looking ride! I love those rims... :)

Those frame decals would look sweet with white outlines and green fill...

Looks pretty good as green with white outline....

  • IMO That looks spot on! :D
  • I hope you're putting a rear mech on first!

Very brave a night ride for the maiden voyage.

lol.... That was taken before On-One shipped me the correct bolts to fit my drop outs (they sent the wrong ones with the frame)

As for the ride last night, the bike feels very solid on the trails, really happy with it... Also night riding is great fun, turned what is usually a fairly boring red trail at Thetford into quite a fun place to be!
Didn't get home till midnight though!
  • Looks sweet.
i'm this close to clicking on the buy on the on-one website for this frame in 16"
Did the Hope D pick and mix bottom cup come withe the race for the forks too? (i'm presuming it did - and Evans current say they have them in stock for the same price as The Bike Chain.
