Knee Trouble & Bike Set Up West Yorks

I seem to have morphed into a road cyclist in my quest for speedy and efficient commuting but as my weekly mileage has recently risen close to 200 I have begun to suffer a little left knee trouble.

I think my left knee rotates out slightly during a rotation and this seems to have caused an unsettling feeling that my kneecap is 'loose' coupled to some mild pain.

My Doc won't see me for a few days but I'm confident it is bike related and would be happy to pay for a bike fitting, consultation and setup. After five days off the bike I'm going crazy to get back on and ride.

Can anyone suggest a place in West Yorks or someone who knows what they are doing ?

Are you using clipless pedals? You may need a small wedge between the shoe sole and cleat to turn your foot back round.

I can't help you suggest where to go for bike fitting but no doubt someone will be able to.

Cannot help you but I had a bike fit at Paul Hewitt's in Leyland and I can recommend him. The guy knows what he does. Before I had my bike fit, I thought that I would need a shorter stem etc and many people here said that as well when described my problem. However, after the fit now I'm using 140mm stem, which is 20mm longer than the previous one and it feels much more comfortable (just a little off topic here).

PS, at 50 quid for about an hour session it's also cheaper than most bike fitting where they will probably charge you 100 or more ;)

i had a similar problem, i rode 60miles aweek with no problems.
i got clipless pedals for a presant and within two months i was getting mild pain in my left knee, recovery was taking 4-6 days after a ride. i found out that it was a combination of several factors.
my first bike was missold i did not get a proper fitting from the lbs. the frame size was atleast one size to big. my seat height wasnt correct because the frame was to big which was then putting to much pressure on my knees, and then the cleats position was wrong for me.
i got anew bike two weeks ago, properly fitted all set up for me. cleats set up, and boy what a differance. i still have a very minor niggle but i only get it after 60-70miles its nowhere near as bad as before, i think it takes a while for a knee injury to recover.
also a very common reason for knee injurys related to cycling is using the wrong gear.

my first bike was a mtb but i rode it like a road bike, the extra weight of the bike, and big long rides, put massive stress on my body, espescially my joints. Also you must give yourself recovery time This is my biggest problem, i cannot stop riding, i keep pushing harder and harder, the longest and only recovery time ive had in three months is four days. If your anything like this , youve gotta take a break, i know its hard try not to increase your workouts more than ten percent. i am sitting here writing this post wanting to be pounding the tarmac. i feel restless. -)

Plus you get to leave West Yorkshire and come to the Peoples Republic.
