Sportique Centuary Riding cream, got me through several 24hr MTB races

And judging by your AV pic it keeps your peachy, round bottom in tip-top, silky-smooth condition. Well done Sir!

Since you want chamois cream and butter, these are my suggestions..

    Chamois Cream - Assos

Butter - Lurpack Un-salted. Make sure you keep it in a pot instead of in the fridge.

Although I was the first vote for Assos, I'll just say that I don't use chamois cream except when I'm wearing shorts with natural chamois pads of which I still have a couple of pairs. Since natural chamois comes out of the wash feeling like stiff corrugated cardboard, it's essential, and you have to put the cream on the pad not on yourself. I don't use it with synthetic pads - never seen the point.

As for Sudocreme, it's only essential if you make a habit of peeing and pooing yourself.

I've used assos for ages but actually had a reaction to their new formula (they're removed the minty goodness :( ), I actually used Sudocrem to treat it, seemed to work OK but what a frickin nightmare it is to wash off your hands! Used it as chamois cream for one ride to and although it seemed OK it wasn't as good as assos stuff and the PITA of washing it off your hands is enough for me not to buy it. Bought some Chapeau cream to try and it seems pretty good, more expensive than assos though and it's no better - bought some udderly smooth stuff as well now but haven't tried it yet.

As for why to use them, they reduce friction and some have anti-bacterial stuff in them which helps to - they are no longer designed just to help rejuvenate natural chamois, they're specifically designed for use with synthetic chamois.

No pants!! That would defeat the object of the insert.

    Not a silly question, I didn't have a clue when I started...probably still don't.

Seams in underwear can cause chaffing.

Used to be Sudocrem but now use Savlon. Much better consistency.
Only use it for rides longer than 1hr unless some irritation already exists.

    Chamois Butter does the job.

Personally I'm not a fan of cooling type stuff. If it works its way inside you it stings like mad :)

Think it depends on the ride. To answer the question, when should you use it - the easy answer is when you know you are likely to suffer chaffing!

I personally use it most of the time, but usually pretty sparingly to just my usual areas that I know chaff. You only really need it when your 'pants' are really wet, hopefully only from either sweat or rain!

The menthol is an added bonus. I'm sure Sudocrem would do the trick - but prefer the proper stuff. Just looked... I have Chamos Butter EuroStyle.
Looking at what I have left in the tub, it appears that I'll get through 1-2 tubs a year and think the cream was £10, so not exactly a huge cost.

Cheers, I've always worn pants under padded shorts for mtb riding. Only recently got a road bike and just ordered some bib shorts so thanks for the feedback.
