hey think i might pop out this afternoon and look at some proper cycling clothes. i have some cheap tops and plenty from running but got the itch to go and get some swanky gear. actually mainly thinking bib shorts today. all kind of things are passing through my mind like....no way a team top not unless a very retro one anyway. if not a team top what label to go with? maybe im just anal but i feel that all the clothes should really be the same make?!
whats everyone elses situaltion/thoughts thank you

I wear what I think looks good. Although i dont have any team tops, i do like the look of some of them & personally i would have no hesatation buying one.
Ive got a couple of tops from Planet X, their tops are nice & dead cheap.
As for bibs, i defo recommend them over normal shorts. DHB from wiggle are good, probikekit have some Craft Bibs 50% off too.
Personally i would buy online as its cheaper & theres a lot more choice. check out wiggle, probikekit, ribble & planet x

Do it - I resisted for ages, but getting the proper gear was one of the things that get me into cycling proper - the right clothes make the whole thing so much more comfortable and pleasurable. Bib shorts rather than waist shorts .... check the size of anything you buy (they vary enormously - for instance I take small Gore bibshorts, but large Northwave tops). I don't wear any team colours - I think it's much more fun being in plain stuff and overtaking people looking like they're in the Tour de France. And I mix & match makes - whatever fits best for top & bottom.

RE Bib shorts - can anyone explain the advantage of them over normal cycling shorts please?

Also - when wearing them do you wear a top too?

Personally I'd feel a bit gay just wearing them - it's like a leotard isn't it?

I can't work out why they are better than just shorts...

    Please advise - cheers

They stay up better, don't dig into your stomach, and are just all-round more comfortable. Yes, you do wear a top over them, so no-one will know (other than you). Anyway, if you're wearing lycra, you might as well get over what others might think of what you look like.

Oh, and the order of clothing goes skin then lycra.

You don't wear anything under lycra (Unless it's a base layer for your top half).

for retro-style kit, have a look at prendas...

    http://www.prendas.co.uk/

...good quality and good service too

forget what you imagine others think about how you look, no one cares, imho most people walking along the street look a mess, they don't seem worried about it, i'm certainly not

skin tight lycra, padded bib shorts etc. are functional - low drag, cooling, comfort
my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny

Apologies. Thought people saying things like "that's gay" ended after we left the playground. You're (presumably) a grown man, so dont say such silly things!

Ok, maybe not quite £500, but a LOT more than I'd needed to if I'd known about that site sooner!

Maybe you need to reread what I actually posted or climb down off that horse that seems to be very high?

    Playground? Whatever pal.

You are a grown man that feels a need to post a sigh on an internet forum.

    Nice!

    ^^^^^ LOL

As we're all roadies here, the thoughts of lycra being "gay" is far from cyclist's minds. Now joggers in lycra shorts.........now that's gay!!:lol::lol::lol:

As above, a proper pair of lycra cycling bib shorts (ie with a pad) will make cycling so much more comfortable. I dont like trade tops either so generally use kit from the likes of Sportful, Endura, Gore, Altura etc.

Most important kit to me is shorts and cycling shoes (and helmet) - i dont buy really cheap items with any of these - bargains online are best as said, so long as you are careful with sizing. Plenty of manufacturers have online guides

I expect you look like a proper screamer, dear boy. Unless you're actually a young lady, in which case you look awesome.

It takes a true keyboard warrior to derive homosexuality from the wearing of lycra.

Maybe he isn't comfortable with himself and seeks change, yet is unsure how to admit it
