Should she be forced to RESIGN as she has decide to go softly softly on the rioters rather than using a hard core method (Watercannon plastic bullets) :?: :?: :?:

    Why should she resign ?

If the police do their job, you get pain in the ar*e pinko doo gooders criticising them and saying that they are too heavy handed. Next time there's troub;e, ie now, they stand back and are criticised because they didn't react in time.

    What do people want ?

They want a perfect world. Well, perfect in their eyes.

Either that or just a fine whine.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

At the risk of starting another argument, it could be argued that the police have got themselves into this position by going in too heavy handed in the past when it wasn't necessary.
  • Police heavyhandedness is has been an issue in the past, but, make no mistake this is just out and out lawlessness by a relatively few idiotic individuals out on the rob.

No doubt there'll be woolly bleeding heart liberals banging the social depravation drum (which may have held water in the 80's) not on this occassion though. When the cuts truley kick in we may well be in for a repeat.
    Tail end Charlie

The above post may contain traces of sarcasm or/and bullsh*t.
  • She is an imbecile and would be best used being fired out a cannon at the protesters. But her name is Theresa! Why can no one spell it right? Same mis-spelling is trending on Twitter.

Both Boris and May haven't had experience of this kind of unrest - who has? - but that did show when both were interviewed recently. Ain't got a clue .....

    Quite.

12 to a cell with bread and water would be a good start.

I trust that the scum that have been arrested will have their benefits withdrawn and herded into chain gangs to clean up the mess. This should also include structurally unsafe buildings of course.

Wednesday 15 September 2010 The Guardian

"The home secretary, Theresa May, has dismissed fears that deep spending cuts could undermine the ability of the police to tackle possible civil unrest, and insisted the British did not respond to austerity by rioting on the streets.

May told the police superintendents' annual conference that it was "ridiculous" to suggest savings could not be made in policing, and went on to challenge the political orthodoxy that fewer officers would inevitably mean more crime. The home secretary pointed out that around the world significant falls in crime had happened alongside stable or even falling police numbers.

May was responding to a warning from the Superintendents' Association president, Derek Barnett, that severe spending cuts could undermine their ability to cope with rising social and industrial tensions as a result of the government's austerity package. Her speech also follows alarming predictions from the Police Federation that up to 40,000 police staff jobs could be lost as a result of a 25% cut, opening the way for a "Christmas for criminals".
  • What they're doing now is not sustainable for any length of time. Half of the Met force was out last night..half the force. I bet a lot of them hadn't had a uniform on in very very long time! A 'friend' (ahem!!) has just been put onto 12 hour turnarounds so 12 on 12 off for 6 days at a time until this all calms down. All well and good but when you consider that the 'friend' rarely gets off less than 2 hours late and then has almost an hours travelling each way as well as three kids, a house to run etc it's not going to take long for these officers to hit exhaustion. Yeah yeah....MTFU I know. That's not to go into the fact that the overtime bill is going to bring the forces to their knees.

I think the police will run out of steam long before the little darlings after their next 42" plasma.

As for the cuts...I'd love TM to go out for a few shifts with my 'friend', have her running around all day like her hairs on fire with no breaks at all as well as fitting in the ever increasing paperwork, victim care, court prep yada yada yada. The 'friend' wouldn't mind all that if she thought that when the sh*t hits the fan there'll be someone available to come and back her up. She lives in hope.

Why only TM? Why not have the lot of the coalition rabble handing in their notice? Though the problems have been building for the last thirty years it is only now, under Cleggeron's watch, that the stresses on broken britain were finally stretched to breaking point.

    I think Rick's right.

The rioters will simply get tired of this, realise it is a little more hassle than it's worth for a partially smashed TV and some ill fitting armani underwear with broken glass in and they will stop of their own accord. Plus it's going to be wet for the next few days, that's usually enough to calm the fervour of even the most revolutionary scrubber intent on 'insurrecting' a plasma TV from dixons.

Not exactly a good outcome for the rest of the country if this were to be the case though. I'd prefer them to be absolutely made to stop and then brought to the most severe justice imagineable.

If I were Charlie Gilmore I would be watching the sentencing with a keen interest. I'll be surprised if anyone gets the book quite so squarely thrown at them as he did.

The police will need to be wary though of situations in the near future that could have the potential to re-ignite the spark of revolution.

Notting Hill carnival anyone? That should be a laugh this year. And, let's face it, it's not like it's ever slightly overcrowded or just a little on the moody side is it.

If you thought these riots were bad, wait until this time next year, The Olympic lockdown that They planned, already harsh, will be even more intensified, which will bring more people into conflict with the met, which will kick it all off again...

Plenty of ex-police officers saying water cannon would be no good as it isn't "traditional" rioting where you get a large crowd fronting up to police throwing missiles (other than the very early stages in Tottenham. Also, there aren't any on the mainland and the police aren't trained to use them so how can she deploy them? The Met have already said they have baton rounds at their disposal and will use them if required. It is senior police officers that decide tactics not politicians.

A night of heavy rain will stop the riots, it has always been the best solution to civil unrest in this country.

I wouldn't be too surprised if the riots flare up again before winter.

    When?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_J ... de_Menezes

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Ian_Tomlinson

To name two more recent incidents.

Edit: A couple more on wikipedia where police shoot dead incorrectly and don't get prosecuted:

On 22 September 1999 Harry Stanley, a painter and decorator, born in Bellshill near Glasgow, was walking home when he was shot dead by two Metropolitan Police officers following an erroneous report that he was carrying a sawn-off shotgun in a plastic bag. The officers challenged Mr Stanley from behind. As he turned to face them they shot him dead at a distance of 5 metres. It later emerged that the plastic bag actually contained a broken table leg that Stanley's brother had just fixed for him. Following numerous enquiries (in November 2004 a jury returned a verdict of unlawful killing) both officers were exonerated after 6 years of court cases and inquiries. It was found that neither officer was liable for criminal charges nor would face any disciplinary sanctions. However, the report did make notable recommendations to the police on the post-incident procedure to be followed after a shooting and about challenging members of the public from behind.[35]

On 15 January 1998 James Ashley, 39, was shot and killed by Sussex Police while naked and unarmed during a drugs raid at his flat. The officer who fired the shots was cleared of any wrongdoing after a trial at the Old Bailey.[33]
