Return of the wind...

My first real experience this morning of proper wind. I woke up and was glad to see no rain so didnt give the wind too much thought and decided to try a 25 mile hilly route that i'd been planning for a couple of weeks. It takes me over some nice hills round the Saddleworth moors so is a good workout for me.
Jesus H  I know what you all mean now about wind Nearly blown off sideways numerous times and i'm no lightweight! On the flats into a headwind like I was still going up the bleedin hills.
With hindsight I'll pay more attention in future to the wind forecast, not just whether I'm going to get wet!0 -
Might have been a bit of wind, but lovely sunshine and relatively warm so had a great club run this morning. Best part was getting a good through and off going into a 3/4 head wind. Loads of cyclists out and about. And when you've paid your dues into the wind and turn for home, what do you get?0

My commute into work is always wind free first thing in the morning, but as the day goes on, I look out the window at a flag I use to gauge the wind, and it is always blowing in the wrong direction.
Every day without fail I have a head wind home...everyday, withoit fail.
Doesn't bother me, I accept its always going to be there and get aero and battle through it!0 -
Yummy! Should make for some interesting racing.
Griff - Which route do you do over the moor? You can get some brutal winds up there.0 -

First time i'd gone this route as I'm still adding hills / distance! Not sure how familiar you are with the area but i went up over Blackstone edge from the Litleborough side into Ripponden then up a hell of a hill past The Fleece pub onto the moors then did a right and went past Scammenden and over the M62. This section was pretty damned bad  Then back down into Denshaw and over into Newhey / Milnrow.
I did think it was a great little route, but maybe on a calmer day - the wind certainly made me think what the bloody hell was I doing there! Saw plenty of cyclist about tho so many a glutton for punishment was out this morning 8)
There are loads and loads of permutations I can do that take in different hills round where I live which is great - I have more of a problem finding routes that are relatively flat!0 -
Decided to get on my bike to rebuild fitness after having my appendix out in April -> been working on my bike fitness through july and august...
so i thought it would be a good idea to do my first 30 mile-er last wednesday into a 20mph headwind with 30mph gusts!
made the ride a little interesting -> got blown into a big pothole/puddle on the side of the road
on the plus side, anything under 30 miles seems pretty easy now0 -
Just been out round Bristol for a quick 20 miles - it was pretty windy to say the least. I think the low point was going up Park Street (fairly steep 10%) right into it. The wind made it twice as hard.0

Not too bad up here in North Yorkshire - managed to get a 58 mile ride in, tailwind going, headwind on the way back with no real crosswind luckily.0

The forecast predicts that parts of the UK and Ireland will see some of the remnants of this hurricane tomorrow! Quite annoying! Might just have to persevere!0

headwind was another story... i mudered myself in the tailwind lol:DCoveryourcar.co.uk RT Tester

briantrumpet wrote:It's now up to predicted 40mph winds and 60mph gusts in Blackpool at the finishing time of the ToB stage. All joking and MTFU comments aside, I wonder if the organisers do have a threshold at which they say enough's enough. Fortunately it's easing off as we go through the week, but I would imagine that winds of this magnitude or above are one of the few things that could make a race like this just too risky.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
The most exposed section of the route (past King's Seat for those who know the area) is a long, only very slightly downhill, straight, and I was holding 40 mph for a bit quite comfortably.
I've never felt the wind on my back like it while riding, I was even quite cold and wet on the back of my legs.
As for heading into it tomorrow... I'm just going out for a ride and may be some time...0 -

Doesn't really seem to have eased a great deal in the NW.
I have just been out for a quick (slow might be a better description) 20 miles and the first half of the ride was into the wind. I had just got up off nights after a pretty poor sleep and was a bit dehydrated before I even started.
After the first 5 miles I would have been quite happy to turn around, go home, sell my bike and dig the golf clubs out.
I got some fluid down me and soldiered on and felt a bit better. Coming home was like I was a pro cyclist and everything is right with the world again :PCube Agree GTC Pro
