Return of the wind...

  • Chilterns aren't much better. It's that joyous moment when you peek out from behind hedge cover at the top of a hill and get hammered by a cross wind. Nearly had my first off in ages.

I don't envy anybody with a south westerly commute this evening!

I think I'll get to Norwich by lunchtime from Devon, and should get back as far as Thetford by sunset. On second thoughts, I'll pootle the 5 miles into Exeter and back. I'm not a real man.
  • I travel quite literally North to South, so enjoyed a heavy angled wind, that feels like a proper headwind on the way in BUT on the way home it merely feels like a cross wind!

I nearly got blown to a complete standstill on my commute this morning! Rode into a direct headwind the whole way and it rained!!!!

No doubt it will be a cross wind on the way home..

Some serious wind you have dug up there briantrumpet. When it's that windy AND raining I don't take much convincing to stay off the bike.
  • i biked from great yarmouth to harleston usually i go other way but thought i would go this way for a change and it was the biggest head wind as you can see from the image the same route 2 days before i averaged 20mph against this wind i was down to 11 and didnt know if i would make it!!!

It was relentless and was uphill pretty much all the way!!

Hard slog 36 miles of pure head wind....
  • when is this bloody wind going to settle down to decent levels :x , this has been a grim year for riding, seems every time Ive been out its swirling wind that makes cycling no fun whatsoever

Don't fight it - accept it, work with it - it's great for training; and enjoy the ride home with the wind on your back.
  • Mind you, it makes you realise the mental strength of Mark Beaumont cycling across that desert in his Americas ride - as I recall, several days straight into a very strong headwind that was blowing the sand straight into his face the whole time. I think I'd crawl straight back into the tent, as I'm a wuss.
  • Don't know what you're all complaining about. I love being blown off.

Metcheck are forecasting 326 mph winds in my neck of the woods this weekend - hope its another computer model cock-up or I'll have to put the road bike away and go out on the mtb.
  • I did a 20 miler last night and ended up nearly being blown of the bike several times. I was around country roads and each time I came past a field entrance the wind would slap me one.

  • It's almost always windy in the UK, so you either have to live with it OR take up Kitesurfing!

Must admit, I don't like 'surprising' cross winds - catching you off guard, but then generally you have to just accept that you need to take more care and not ride like a madman on the fast sections.

Went out for a thirty miler today and after 22 I had absolutely nothing left. My route is mainly along the North East coast and the wind was absolutely relentless. For the first time ever I stopped on a climb and had a rest. So ashamed.....

  • It gets interestinger - 60mph gusts forecast for Monday where the Tour will be - Hurricane Katia is heading our way. In fact, the Met Office say that 80mph winds are possible, but they say it's hard to predict exactly where they'll be. No doubt the ToB organisers will just be telling the riders the MTFU, as it's only wind.
  • I know every year I whine about the weather, and in particular the wind. But seriously, and 2011 must have been the windiest year so far! It seems to have been relentless since the frigging Spring!!

    To paraphrase Maximus from "Gladiator",
" and if you ride with the wind on your back - do not worry, you are in Elysium."

Seriously though, been out today, managed about 75 km at 30 km/h, but when its so windy it makes me very nervous at higher speeds, has anyone any tips on how to ride more aggressively so the wind doesn't have as much of an effect, thinking more in terms of handling and holding your line rather than average speed, cheers.

I've got to say that headwinds may be soul destroying but these blustery cross winds I've experienced over the past few days are genuinely dangerous, Im a lightweight skinny git and they just blow me across the road.
  • Tour of Britain update: if they think it's windy today in Scotland, wait for tomorrow in Blackpool:
