Anybody here do it? I want to start learning how to do it, but am very concerned about certain aspects such as the clay stage, heard that if you mess it up it can cause significant damage.

If you do it, got any tips for starting off, ways to ease into it? I also assume its not necessary to have the rotating machine things?

You need to get onto detailing world and get your wallet out because those products are mighty expensive.

You can't cause significant damage by claying a car..it's very easy to do..spray section with detailer, rub with clay bar, dry with microfibre cloth, job done..

You can however use a clay that maybe too aggressive..... Start with a soft green one. Also make sure you don't use the same bit of clay everywhere .... Once it starts to look to be picking stuff up the use a different part. Always keep it lubed and you can use lightly shampoo d water not just detailer. There used to be a sticky on DW on polishing and will explain more if it's still there.

    Good luck.

Ps the time you are ponging around with all that you could be out riding.
    That's why I stopped.

Best thing to do is buy the meguiars smooth surface clay kit..you can't go wrong with that one..Especially as not all "soft" clay bars are green....

used to be into this when i 1. had a nice motor and 2. didnt have a kid

now my energy goes into the bike

takes far less time to clean, and costs far less to fix/fiddle with

it covers more than that i.e. polishing (which is harder to do properly than you may think)

but in essence, yeah its fancy cleaning

appeals to my slight OCD tendencies, but now i have a sprog, i just dont have the time

people find it highly amusing, until you do their car for them

i did my mates M3 for him when he came to sell it, and some bloke commented on how nice it was when he was filling up with petrol

I think if you were to detail my car you'd have to start with a sledgehammer and bolster chisel.

    + Potato.

you people need to seek professional help. A car is something you use to take you places, no?

Mine isn't. Mine is like a little garage just now, used to store a lot of tools and all of its front suspension and brakes in.

But at least it isn't clean, that'd just be weird

Definitely can, I spend more time riding my bike than I do cleaning it.

People who clean an item more than they use it, are commonly referred to as "girls"

my neighbour details his car. To be fair, it's a nice car (an Evo Makkinen) but he said it takes about 18 hours to fully detail it and I just couldn't put that amount of time and effort into cleaning a motor.

Friend of mine has used the immortal words "Oh I could drive but I've just waxed the car and I don't want to get it dirty". At that point, you know longer own the car, it owns you.

An ex girlfriend of mine used that excuse about her cat. At least, I think she was talking about her cat.

I've only done one detail on one of my cars and it took me about seven hours to do, needless to say I do like to keep my car cleaned and polished once every couple of weeks (wish I could detail my bike more than the car), but for me it's clean one minute, the next it's filthy again, but you can't beat having a shiny looking car on the drive for a couple of days.

detail = cleaning. We've established that. Stop trying to pretend it's a passtime by giving it some trendy name. We all know it's just a mental disorder. The sooner you accept it, the sooner you can be helped.

    Yes, they are for real.

The finish on cars with similar waxes is fooking amazing in the flesh, if I had the money I'd get my Aston done with it thats for sure.

But doesn't the car just look sh!te again after you've driven it once? I used to polish up an MX5 I had a few years back. Looked great for a day or so till it rained.

Just can't be arsed these days.... riding is way more fun.

After polishing which fills in the marks on your paint to make it nice and shiny you need to wax your motor to create a waterproof barrier over it, think of it as washing your biking garments with Nik Wax tech wash, it beads the water up nicely.

It doesn't take too long to do, well to wash/polish/wax my car properly it takes around 6hrs :P
