Most of mine through the trailbuilding sessions at Glentress
But I guess I only go to those because of a big series of coincidences. I used to go to uni with 2 of my riding buddies. I wasn't mountain biking at the time, neither was one of them actually. We lost touch after graduation, and I'd never really heard from them for about 5 years.
Then, I broke my hip, and decided to break out my ancient mtb purely for the exercise, as the leg was ****ed. And after a while of riding on the road went up onto some of the old mtb trails near my house, then a wee bit further...
Then I bought a used Carrera, and at the same time picked up a copy of What Mountain Bike. And in that issue, by pure luck, was a letter from one of those old uni mates. So I sent him a text, we went for a ride, and the next thing I know I'm a gigantic bike addict.Uncompromising extremist0 -

Today was the final straw- phone call at 8am "Want to goout biking this afternoon, my friend has taken her road bike back so it'll have to be the MTB?" "Yes, fine, how about 1pm- we could do the east side of the Feshie as a recon see how the track is towards the Geldie burn?" "Yes fine see you at 1 then"...
So I changed my plans, was going to go biking in the morning, kayaking for 3hrs, then out with the dog for a 6 mile walk(my Kincraig triathlon!).
12:45....phone call saying the weather forecast wasn't good, and she was slightly tired.
Why I asked?
Cos I've just run 20 miles, thought I would be ok but I'm shattered(she's an "ultra runner" who's been on holiday in Spain for a month, no doubt punishing herself for eating and drinking!)
So 20 miles then a bike? Never again- never mind the Ipod nonsense it's like she uses the bike for a warm down session, that's why I always feel each trip is well below my normal effort...it's cos she preloads on running and is too tired to give the bike 100%.
That's fecking it!!!! :evil:0 -

I know a few people 'in the real world' who like a pedal. Most my rides tend to be last minute but I'll sometimes put up on my FB status times/meet up points and see who turns up. I'm not adverse to pedalling solo, but sometimes it nice to get a few involved.1999 Scott Vail - Work commute

Used to ride solo for years, which was nice for exploring as people you ride with tend to stick with familiar routes or it's a pain for a group to go off down odd paths just to see where they go and have to retrace. Don't mind doing that myself when I've got loads of time.
But a group is far more fun and rarely ride solo now as there's always someone out.
A group is also handy for dealing with incidents, either pure mechanical or those requiring medical assistance including an ambulance.
Have wondered about places I ride solo and how if I was unconscious I'd probably not be found until the next day or later. Or be eaten by wolves.0 -
I ride alone in some very remote places with no mobile signal, what would happen if I broke something, crashed, etc is always at the back of your mind but it's also good to just be self reliant at times. You tend to be less gung ho on more manic sections than when with others.
I'm seriously considering getting a "blizzard bag"- size of an old VHS but if you were stuck somewhere could be a lifesaver....(very handy too for hillwalking)
