Ive been out about 4 times this year without under armour and tights. Today in Leicester its like October. We are not far off August, and August is always hit and miss, not had any of those evenings where you sit outside in a t-shirt, still steaming hot, go to bed with the bed stripped, every window in the house open, still steaming. I predict snow in September. P*ss P*ss poor. Global warming, my saddle sore arse.

Suck for the U.K. weather :(

I love being able to go swimming at 2am in an outdoor pool from May-September pretty much everyday!
  • 4 times? Seriously......

You cant be trying very hard to get out then. My parents live near Leicester and even i have managed 2 rides there in clear weather on the only two occasions i have visited. I am from Cumbria BTW. We get even more rain

    Maybe you exaggerate ;-)

I even got out on Saturday. Peed down all morning then BANG, clear sky for 2hrs. Managed a 50km blast and even managed some sunshine

Last night we were kept awake by the rain and wind on the roof - shockingly bad weather, and quite cold with it too.

I have to say the weather hasn't actually been that bad. We've not had any prolonged spells of summery weather but living in Scotland you'd need to be a mug to expect that. Sunny or not I've been finding it quite warm lately and I don't really care if it's raining as long as the wind isn't 100mph.

its probably an exageration, but only very slight.

In agreement with others though, The wind is vile, not so fussed about the rain, literally its been windy here since end of April, whats that all about? Considering couldn't really get any further in-land.

It's July, we've had weather like this in July for years now, why the suprise ?

I was out yesterday near Leicester, we started at Tollerton, headed down towards Loughborough, then down towards Leicester, and back. The wind was a b*tch, but it was fine otherwise. I had arm warmers on when we started out, but certainly no need for tights.

The rest of July will be as is, August will be ok, September/October will be lovely. Standard English summer.

I hope it's wet for the next few weeks whilst i'm injured. I'd hate the weather to be nice whilst i'm not able to touch a bike.. :?

Well I've gone from recently researching for a new pair of shorts, to now starting to think about getting some roubaix 3/4 bibs!

Anyhoo the last week of July will be ok. August will be generally dry.

Yeah, it sucks - rain I'm not bothered with, but the relentless wind is getting very tedious now... don't think it's dropped below 15mph for over a fortnight down here on the South coast.

Last night it sort of ruined my ride - a 5km gradual climb with a 1km 18% curving switchback descent on the other side... in the dark, massive side wind, and raining... in shorts and s/s jersey. Instant cramp and burnt out brakes.

Don't really want to do the coastal routes at the moment either, as the novelty of riding into or with a howling gale is wearing a little thin.

Just looked on the met office website and we've got another week of >25mph gusts.

    Bah

agree - driving me insane. we have had about 3 or maybe 4 days since april where the wind has been lower than about 15-20mph here on the fylde (north-west) coast. today we have the joys of 28mph with 45mph gusts - oh the joy of it!

today is proper miserable - i've got the heating on today!! (work from home) its only just above single figures temperature wise - and the rain only stopped about half an hour ago having rained so hard all night that it kept me awake and then came down to a steady rain which has gone on ALL DAY!

I didn't go out all weekend as it was torrential, cold and blowing a gale - honestly closer to November temperatures than July - I need to go out tonight though as I need to get my mileage back up for July. i guess i'll have to man up a little :-)

Evidently, the trend is for very cold winters for the forseeable future. Time to get some studded tyres on the bike? :)

Er, I suppose if we are going back into an Ice Age cycling will be the least of our worries. Mammoth sandwich anyone? :?

The weather is getting me down, I don't mind mtb'ing in poor weather but find riding on the road stressful enough without the spray from cars etc. Might be a newbie thing, but it's certainly not helping to move beyond being a newbie...

Because temperatures are fairly chilly this week does not mean global warming doesn't exist. The warming is more than just a temperature increase, you feel those in the poles, but for the rest of the worlds this causes huge shifts in weather patterns, making it more extreme in many cases, and causes huge fluctuations in climates that should be fairly stable.

Well, I'm not going to admit that it hasn't been windy here (I've had a moan about that on BR), but about 5000 miles on the clock in 2011, and most of them in the dry. Mind you, I am a bit of an obsessive weather-watcher, so I can grab rides at the better times. I will admit to fitting work round the better riding weather. And I live in Devon, where the sun always shines anyway. Well.... sometimes.

Those and Riders on The Storm i like to hear when it's coming down outside,i love the rain and the last few times i have rode in a downpour i have been smiling and laughing,of course it's not always like that but sometimes you just have to enjoy what you can when you can.

Mountain Monster is right (according to some climate-watchers). Global warming doesn't mean warmer summers; it means unpredictable weather patterns on local, regional and global scale. For cyclists it means arm warmers in July and a force 5 wind in your face all bloody day.......

Well, there's fine line between MTFUing and just being bloody silly/suicidal; big crosswind gusts and wet/slippery surfaces on public roads are asking for trouble

The simplest way of getting shot of this weather is for us all to buy some wet weather gear tomorrow = instant heat wave
  • I started cycling in August last year and remember it being short sleeve and shorts weather up to mid October (Cork, Ireland), and didn't get too cold until mid/late November. Was in Australia for January, so started back cycling in Feb, was cool but not windy, winds started in Apr and the weather just seems to have gotten worse since then.

Kept myself going with the thoughts of nice days in May, that didn't happen. June was even worse, stronger colder winds - Actually bought full length winter bib tights for the first time in June and several base layers as I found the winds very chilling.

Now July has added more frequent rain with even stronger winds, can count on 1 hand the number of cycling days I'd class as coffee shop cruising weather. I don't commute but have 5600km + racked up so far including 40+ >100km rides (mostly solo) so I'm not dodging the bullet, but I have to agree - the weather is appalling. Not a year for encouraging people to take it up as a fun past time.

Don't think it's going to pick up at all, so I'm going to book a sunny cycling holiday in October just to finish the year with some nice day.

I`m particularly pi..ed off, as I`m on a weeks holiday at home; I`ve got to look after my little boy today and Thursday, but I would have thought that as it is July I would have at least one warm sunny day when I would be able to get out and do my favourite 50 mile loop. Wish I had a Turbo Trainer, at least I would be able to close my eyes and imagine I`m out somewhere pleasant!!

I thought about going out for 15 miles, got the lycra and socks on, then decided to walk down the pub instead.

Glad I did - it's chucked it down since 8pm, and two pints of bitter and gawping at the barmaid's ample charms was a far better choice.
