Race preparation rides

I read that it's a good idea to do a short ride at race pace the day before a race. I have no idea if it works or not, or how well it works compared to riding gently, and I have no way of knowing. Does anyone here not do this, and if not, what do you do instead?

I've found either makes no difference, I've tried a light spin the day before, and a full out effort TT the day before another TT, doesn't make a whole lot of difference to my performance, although NOT riding at all the day before isn't a good idea, for me.
