i was diagnosed with patellar tendinopathy last november after falling very hard on my left knee, i went to see a knee specialist who injected it with cortisone and referred me to a physo connected with his practice.four months of seeing the physio and no real difference, eccentric exercises ,accupuncture and various other things.went back to see the surgeon and he told me to carry on with seeing the physio and everything should be sorted in eighteen months or so.my insurance wont pay for anymore physio,i need to find a surgeon who has dealt with this kind of injury.the pain is no longer confined to the pateller but moves around the knee.i am based in coventry but will travel any where in reason.just wanna get back on the bike.hope somebody can help.thanks

  • Is that another word for Patellar tendonitus. If so there are various exercises to help but from what i experienced there arent any cures and from an operational viewpoint you would do very well to persuade anyone to carry any procedures out.

I had/have it in both knees. I managed to get medical intervention when i managed to snap my right one completely. I have a scar running from about 2" above the knee to about 2" below where my knee was pulled apart. 6mths lately the rest has done the left one the world of good and the right one is starting to respond to exercise.

The only thing they are gonna prescribe is exercises and rest and it wont be for the short term

That sounds really nasty - puts my broken collar bone into some kind of perspective.

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!
  • I have read a thread somewhere else about a guy who has partially torn his p tendon. Even then he couldnt get surgical intervention :-(

Considering this tendon puts about 18 times your body weight through it when running/jumping you can imagine what kind of BANG it goes with when it snaps (Mine tore a velcro knee support off).

Trust me you do not want to be snapping this tendon, exercises and rest are the only things i know of. If you do find something then i will be most interested as my left will no doubt flair up again in the future. No idea what the right one is gonna be like but my football days are over.

If it's patellar tendinopathy rather than tendonitis, I think any specialist is going to tell you what you've already been told - abstention from the bike plus physiotherapy (and/or swimming) is the best way to fix it. Surprised, though, that you were given a cortisone injection. Cortisone is used as an anti-inflammatory in cases of patellar tendonitis (which I've had for 25 years now), but my understanding is that anti-inflammatories are of no use in the treatment of tendinopathy. Might it be worth getting a second opinion as to whether it's tendinopathy or tendonitis that's the problem?

I know a guy who has this (a volleyball player) at the gym I go to. He's just coming out of a 12-week hard-core daily regime of eccentric decline one-legged squats (painful apparently!) and is just about getting back to regular training (e.g. full squats, and actually playing). What exactly was your physio regime? If you want to beat this, it's not a surgeon you need to find, but a good coach and you need to stick religiously to a routine.
