Hello. I have just committed to doing Lands End to John O'Groats in May 2012. I am an enthusiastic cyclist but doing this in 9 days at an average of 100+ miles per day and no rest days is a big undertaking. I have done the odd 100+ mile sportive but this is in a different league. I live in Wilmslow, Cheshire and have 11 months to sort myself out!!

Is anyone out there doing similar training and want to hook up or even better anyone else on the trip (action challenge)?

11 months is plenty of time!! For starters are you a member of a club?

Eh? What difference does that make? All the guy needs to do is ride his bike. You don't need to join a club for that.
    More problems but still living....

What you're planning is very do-able. You don't need to cycle fast - just a good steady pace with stops for refreshments. Your big questions are accommodation (B&Bs, Travelodges etc) and routing. Routing and stops need research - unless you're following a know route. I did LEJOG in 2009 and all the routing information (including GPX files) can be found on my website at : http://www.wilkinet.demon.co.uk/Cycling/Tours.html

For your bike, make sure you have a decent range of gears (compact or triple) and you'll need a decent saddlebag (or panniers). Make sure everything is set for a comfortable ride paying particular attention to contact points - saddle and pedals especially.

Preparation is everything. Take long weekend rides working up to an over-distance 125 miles (audax rides are great preparation - see www.aukweb.net/home/ for rides in your area). Training over-distance on a single ride makes doing daily 100 miles seem easier. Sportives are also ok but tend to be more competitive - not what you really want for E2E prep.

Most of all, enjoy it. It's a great challenge and you'll be amply rewarded.
