Lanterne Rouge

He finished today together with Muravyew, but says he only noticed Muravyew in the last 200 m before the line, so there was no manoeuvring between them for position or time.
(Muravyew is so far behind because he also crashed on the first stage)0 -
Heroes both of them.
The suffering and bravery of the Lanternes is what attracted me to them during the (boring) Armstong era. I hear that French TV actually interviews the Lanterne after each stage.0 -
Stage 6- Jerome took his eyes off the ball today, arriving second last to Jimmy Engoulvent of Saured SoujurnSun, but in the same time of 12' 26". There were 20 riders in the autobus, so no-one was lonely today. Jerome still way ahead in the overall though by 46' 23". His nearest challenger, Jesus Hernandez, is over 11 minutes behind.
Worth noting that last year's Lanterne, Adriano Malori, aged 12, was the star of the breakaway today.0 -
Excellent write up Tusher0

Well, Vincent lost the plot today, coming in 168th out of 190, a full 9' 35" down on today's Lanterne- one Christopher Horner of the US of A, although M. Jerome does still keep the overall leader's jersey.
After today's performance though, I have my doubts about his form in the mountains. The competition is always tougher there. We'll see.0 -
Stage Eight- Jerome hangs on to the overall, and is now over an hour ahead of Thor.
Vacansoleil failed to get into the break today (which I'm not sure is allowed) but at least they now have Wouter Poels is in the red jersey tonight.0 -
Stage 9- Fabrice Jeandesboz brought it home for France. Vincent still in the overall red. Interesting to see if he can make the most if a rest day.0
-
Stage 10- Jerome still holding on to the leader's jersey with a healthy 7 ' 23" advantage, and he must feel confident in his ability to retain it because he generously allowed Marcus Burghardt to cross the line behind him today, even although they both came in at the same time.0
-
Worth noting that Vincent Jerome was last on stage 1 and has been lanterne rouge ever since. It'd be some achievement to carry it all the way through, for three weeks. Not sure if anyone has ever done that before.0
-
Had a quick search, but couldn't find a definitive answer, although I suspect you're right monkey boy.0
-
Stage 11- Vladimir Isaichev of the all Russian Katusha took the honours today, although Vincent does still retain his lead, but only just. Today, he came in 76th and on the same time as Mark Cavendish- clearly gossiping with team mate and French hero, Little Tommy Voeckler,(who was 75th) instead of concentrating on the task in hand.
Tsk0 -
76th! What was he playing at! Took his eye off the ball there.0
-
Indeed- and he had a long, straight run into the finish- a perfect opportunity to take the maximum time available.
Tomorrow will be more difficult. Not only will he have competition from the autobus, but the Lanterne must toy with the time limit in the mountains. And these sprinters make talented Lanternes when the opportunity arises.0 -
Vincent's held it! He's even managed to increase his lead over Gert Steegmans in the overall.
A total of 79 riders in today's autobus- yup, 79- coming in 33' 05" after Basque dream, the non-Basque Samu Sancheth. So I'm suspecting that M. Jerome was wary of slipping off the back by a second or so, but he did let 4 riders, including one Thor-the-Giant-Slayer, arrive behind him. Tomorrow should be a better stage for him.
Oh, forgot to say, today's Lanterne is Borut Bozic of SunnyHolidays.
I suspect that Vincent's just lending out the red jersey to save himself, just as LA did with the yellow.0 -
Dear Richard,
Thank you most kindly for providing the portrait of Monsieur Jerome.
I have yet to master the technique of achieving this, although I am working on it. Luckily, I have small nephews who enabled me to put up a likeness of myself, but they are presently unavailable for other posting photograph duties. Well, to elaborate, they chose to exclude themselves from this exciting activity after being persuaded to download my latest photographs from the camera on to the computer. Apparently I require a yet another electronic gadget for this, and it's lost. Their language and subsequent sniggering at the inadequacies of their elders shall be remembered when I come to purchase their Christmas presents.
I am therefore most pleased that you are both willing and able to undertake such a role for me.
Yours in humble technical incompetence,
Mistress Tusher0 -
V. Jerome will surely hold on to it for a few more days at least - he seems comfortable in the Autobus.
Europcar are bookending the tour - who would of thought it.

If you're going to lionise the back marker, at least show us what he looks like.[/img]
Nah, getting lionised is what happens at the other end of the race. Here's Fabian Cancellara being lionised by a grumpy Ben Stiller:

HE'S LOST IT!!
Vincent is now 4'54" behind Audrey Tautou Amadour of Moviestar in the overall. (Richard, if you could post the portrait please.) Audrey has come from nowhere to snatch the jersey today.
Today's winner was Romain Zingle of Cofidis.
I have to stop here because all I can think of is Roman Shingles and an itchy EBH. It's not a pleasant image.0 -

I don't much like the look of this one, but he's from Costa Rica so that's a plus point.:

Great minds think alike, Mrs TakeTheHighRoad!
Disaster. Vincent came in ahead of the autobus today, and has lost time in the overall, now lying second to Amorous Audrey, who won today's red jersey and has now increased his lead to 7'54".
Coming in ahead of the autobus- I mean, what sort of behaviour is that from a Lanterne?0 -
Nice to see the Carrot Boys take a prize today- Pablo Urtasun Perez.
In the overall, Audrey's lead has now increased to almost ten minutes ahead of Vincent, but with the Pyrenees to come there is still everything to play for.
I wonder if anyone has ever won the Green Jersey AND the Lanterne Rouge? Cav is 45 minutes behind Amarour, so unlikely this time, although I suspect that we may well see him in red over the next couple of days.0 -

Presumably mirror-imaging one's interest in the GC leads to mirror-imaging the geography of France (and who knows what else!)
I don't know if Jerome has ambitions to regain the lanterne rouge, but I read today that Amador now has ambitions to carry it to Paris.Tusher wrote:I wonder if anyone has ever won the Green Jersey AND the Lanterne Rouge?
Maybe Durand went for both as a joke (he was the type), because the red background of the number on the most-active rider's back is the closest a rider will get to actually having a lantern hanging off him.0 -

Wonderful- he has the making of a true Lanterne- gritty, determined, persevering against all the odds.
And good-looking to boot.0
