Cav spoke with pride and respect when accepting his MBE. It is unusual to receive such an honour for success in a minority sport without winning an Olympic gold. It shows what an amazing winner he is. Love him or hate him, you have to respect his success, and I for one am glad he comes from our islands and has expressed himself so eloquently when accepting his honour.

I have to say I am always saddened when the Brit Bashers come out for someone doing well. Mark Cavendish is an absolute legend - what some perceive as arrogance is purely focus and drive and Mark always recognises and thanks his team for his success.

Mark is a British Sportsman that we should all admire and respect for his achievement.

The MBE is great news both for Mark Cavendish and the sport.

    Delighted.

Very well deserved, truly the the best in the world at what he does. When you read it back, 25 GT stage wins in four years in incredible.

25 Grand Tour stage wins, one monument, two world track titles and multiple other victories. Yeah, he's done nothing.

Whether you like him or loathe him as a person, I think its hard to argue with his results. Most Cyclists would swap what they have won in a whole career for what he has won in the last 4 years.

Equally he is certainly helping to get cycling brought to the wider British public which has certainly got to be good for the sport.

Although I love the fact that he is claimed by Britain because he is doing well. It's often the same with Irish winners- they're British until they're losers, then they're Irish..

If he starts to do badly (not that I can see it) I bet he'll always be referred to as from the Isle of Man and not held up as British

Northern Irish, Welsh and Scottish too- but I've heard of Irish people being referred to as "British". I once read somewhere that Roy Keane is regarded as one of the greatest British footballers ever and U2 are one of the best British bands ever

I think he's claimed by Britain not because he does well, but because he rides for Great Britain. (We also 'claim' Chris Froome)

    British.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British

I don't take much notice of these awards as there has been to much abuse of there use historically, this is born out by some of those that have received these type of awards and why.
However Cav's a great sprinter and should be respected for what he does on the bike.

As much as the honours system is about the the forelock tugging masses striving for some sort of recognition from an unelected monarchy and only perpetuates the class system in our so called model democracy at least his achievements are being recognised i suppose.Still i would have more time for him if he had politely told them where to go.

If he accepts it he gets slagged off for being undeserving; if he refuses it he gets slagged off for being disrespectful. He can't win.

So do you not hold a British passport if you live in Northern Ireland? Ireland is actually part of the British Isles so all the people of the whole island of Ireland are theoretically British

Please explain why is it disrespectful to turn down an honour ? after all there have been many famous people before him who have done it and it didnt do them any harm.

    It didn't change anything either.

Perhaps, he doesn't subscribe to the same world view as you. After all, they just opinions, not facts.
