Intervals

i just have a couple of questions regarding interval training.

1. Pure and simple - what are they and what are they used for?
2. Are they of any benefit to someone like myself who does 150-200 miles per week including a club run on a Sunday.
3. Are different types of interval training used for different things?

Sorry if this question is a bit broad. Just wanted to get a better understanding and know whether they would be of any benefit to me.

Cheers

1: Hard race pace and higher than race pace sessions, short and hard basically
2: Depends, if you don't race, I can't see the point of them, and it sounds like you don't have shortness of time for cycling.
3: Yes there are different types and they are generally used for stimulating different systems.

As I mentioned above, unless you are racing I don't really see the point of them, they are not needed for the club run.

Some people that want to get faster, and are short of time will do them, as well as those that race either short distance TT's or road races, as they are needed here to stimulate the body into get faster over shorter efforts.

    If done correctly they hurt.
