Try Endomondo Pro or the free lite version

You can make a route on the webby, down load it to your phone and ride it then try to beat it next time.

Alternatively you can just track any work out yuo do, it measures time, distance, calories, av speed and maps your route.

You can dowload othe rpeoples routes and try to beat them at it.

Its a great app worth looking at..

  • MapMyRide is a good one. Used it a few times and it's always been accurate even in areas where I know there's little mobile signal, let alone 3G.

I'm an Andriod user, but I'll 2nd Endomondo. I only use the free version, but find it does a good job and there are some nice features for reviewing your rides (and those of others) when you log on to their website.

Cyclemeter - great app for tracking the ride, gives altitude graph and all the time details you could possibly wish for. Easy to post results to share with other data geeks.

I also use Cyclemeter, but I am thinking about getting a Garmin simply because they are weatherproof and I am always paranoid about my iphone getting water damage!

The accuracy, the ease with which it loses satellite signal and the ridiculous data spikes that the poor reception creates. I haven't tried the up dated version yet but it also lacked an auto pause so if you stopped for a few minutes before looking at your stats, they were meaningless.

  • Cyclemeter for me too, never had any problems with it even in the suffolk countryside! Usually pop it into my saddle bag, works best with wi-fi off.

I got Cyclemeter in the end.

Works really well. Autostop seemed to work also.

    Runkeeper - its free.

It tracks all sorts of activities, has a big online social network to help you train with mates, and has all the usual tracking features and real-time view.

Great for all sorts especially Triathlon training.

If you pay for the Elite version it will track you so that anyone you have accepted can log into your profile and watch your progress on a map in Real-Time! Amazing! Great for safety if your out on your own, and also for people watching your TT or races.

Best iPhone app? The one that lets you install Android over the top of it =P

But Apple hatred aside, Endomondo is free and awesome!

  • Having seen how many recommended Cyclemeter, I downloaded it yesterday and gave it a try on a quick 13 mile blast. I prefer it over my previous recommendation of MapMyRide. It's much more detailed and I love the fact that it gives you altitude, total ascent/descent and saves it automatically to a calendar so no need to transfer data to another app.

So, if I'm allowed, I'll change my recommendation to Cyclermeter!!!

Cyclemeter has had autostop for several versions now and I've never had a problem with data spikes or losing satellite signal. Maybe it's your phone? FIW I have only used it on an iphone 4. I'll concede that I don't think it's great for tracking elevation accurately, but I've never had an issue with distance or speed tracking.

IMO it's the best app of the ones I've looked at. I like the fact that you don't need to upload anything to a website: all your ride history is stored on the phone, but you've got the option of exporting to sites like RideWithGPS.com, facebook, dailymile etc. You can also map out rides on RWGPS, MapMyRide and upload them to cyclemeter to help with navigation. I also like the feature where you can race against yourself or other opponents on routes you do regularly and follow the progress against your opponent on the map.

Features I would like to see added are automated upload to RideWithGPS.com and turn-by-turn navigation for routes you map out and upload to it. I don't think it will ever have the latter, but I'm led to believe Navigon can do this.

I use it with the Tigra iPhone bike mount and it has been awesome. Battery life could be an issue but you can switch off the screen and get at least 6 or 7 hours riding time out of it. Highly recommended app and possibly the best £2.99 I've ever spent.
  • MapMyRide is a good one. Used it a few times and it's always been accurate even in areas where I know there's little mobile signal, let alone 3G.

They don't need a phone signal at all, its done on the GPS.

I've been using two at the same time mapmyride (free version) and B.icycle (think it was a fiver) with mixed results. I quite like mapmyride but it doesn't save the max speed at the end of your ride (no biggy, but sometimes nice to see), it also sometimes misses part of your route (same bit every time?!) this can be repaired on the fairly good website but it is a bit buggy and then saves the route twice. Gradients are well mapped out for your route on the site too.

Running in the background at he same time B.Icycle plots it perfectly but uses open source mapping (not google like MMR) it also records all your stats and can auto pause when you stop. It's quite good but as yet no used the website so dunno about that. The app doesn't feel or look as good as MMR either.

Think out of the two, Mapmyride edges it for me but I'll give cyclemeter a bash too.

    Strava iphone app.

Free and you can compare your own times on segments of your ride. Try it out!

    +1 on endomondo
    auto update to facebook/twitter

    workout variations on app:
    Basic workout
    Manual Entry
    Set Goal (distance/time/calories)
    Beat a friend
    compete on a route
    Beat yourself

Auto pause if you want, or leave it off, countdown starter if you want, history and also split times. Map can be standard, satelite, hybrid.

Plus, you also have the website which auto stores your workouts and gives stats breakdown.

And its not restricted to just cycling, so you can use it for anything really - walking, running etc etc. stats will drill down by sport.

On my iphone3gs, i get around 2.5hrs. I did the London Marathon in April and used Endomondo on a blackberry instead (BB battery lasts much longer) and i still had over half battery life remaining after!

Free App, so you wont lose anything by giving it a try.

  • Been using Mapmyride for 2 or 3 weeks, and always found the website a bit of a pain to use/understand.

used endomondo for the first time tonight. Awesome.

Clear, concise website and app. I'll not be going back to MMR any time soon.

It certainly gives me the best stats!!

I also like the way it only updates your speed every 3 seconds but does it to 2 decimal places.

I may give it another go but whilst it has plenty of bells and whistles, the core functions were pretty useless.

I've never had anything like that happen In over 120 journeys logged on Cyclemeter. I notice your graphic is from September 2010. Why don't you try a recent version, there have been many updates and improvements since last September.
