Please don't start something like the rotor thread about headset cups.

Maybe we will have to agree to disagree. From what I have seen and worked with, this is a cupped press fit headset with a retained bearing as it is a cheap unit. It is the ZS Zerostack standard, an internally fitting headset.

It does not take cartridge bearings. The cup and retainer with bearings may form a 'cartridge' just as a Shimano UN bottom bracket is a 'cartridge' bottom bracket. But cartridge bearings it ain't. It is a press fitted, cupped headset with bearings with retainer.

OK, so what is your definition of a cartridge bearing then SS?

Similar to what you are describing, but in the world of mountain bikes this headset has CUPS. FSA describe it as a semi cartridge design, not as a cartridge bearing itself! The bearing code is MR083. If you remove the bearings the cups will still be there in the frame! Heasdets either are internal/external ie have cups that press into the frame, or integrated, that use drop in bearings into a specific headtube. This is how headsets have always been described.

This is a bespoke unit. The manufacturer says it has cups. The Zerostack standard says it has cups. The new headset coding says it has cups. Everyone else here says it has cups. And 99% of people you ask will say it has cups. Where bikes are concerned, these are cups.

As nick says, as it is a cheapo unit, it uses loose balls with a retainer.

just like a crown race on a cartridge headset it is not a race as the race is part of the bearing.

think about your old external headsets. did you call the bits that get pressed in cups or Races? they are called Cups. but they are races as the bearings run on them.
