After ride recovery following longish layoff

Hi all,
Spent 12 weeks off bike this year due to tendonitis. Last week I went out for first ride, did about 30 iles over two rides in a weekend. Felt great on the rides & in fact required discipline to go home.
Mon & Tue were rotten. Burning in both legs & stiff, with waht felt like a mild fever on monday. I used to get delayed soreness badly in the old days when I played footy but this was like mild flu. Just starting to really get over it 5 days later. One thigh is still a little 'warm' but certainly no pain or anything.
Have to admit I left it about 2hr after I came in & had a hot bath in the evening. Legs felt inflamed afterwards & then stiffness set in. Basic questions are...
1) hot vs cold bath/shower?
2) what do you do in terms of recovery drinks etc? do you see these as essential?
3) would you warn down & if so what do you do? Ironically when I played footy I used to go & have a quick spin on the bike few hrs after the game!
Main issue is that I have never spent this long laid up before & have to admit was quite disturbed with how crap I felt. I'm 36 by the way.
cheers
