I actually really like them!0

"Tejay Van Garderen, one of the the young American bluds coming through the sport at the moment" Brap Brap Phil and Paul!!
Ed. I think it's 'Bludz' actually. I'm just not street enough.0 -
Gazzetta67:What's Sherwin's obsession with putting the word "Team" in front of everything ??
I imagine that's a combination of working in a sport based so heavily in France and just translating literally (as I've noticed both of the guys do regularly) - "Equipe X" - and also following the American obsession with putting team in front of names, especially of national teams.

I still enjoy Phil and Paul's commentary. They are the Murray Walker or Ted Lowe of their sport - you think of them when you think of those sports commentators.
However, their obsession with mentioning the Clean Bottle is a bit annoying, endorsements or not.
And Surely everybody notices that most of Paul's comments begin with an almost word for word repetition of what Phil's just said. A fictitious example:
Phil: "And David Millar's really cranking up the pace."
Paul: "David Milar's really cranking up the pace... and I think he's starting the lead-out for Julian Dean."
It's like a good old blues song where originally the lines were repeated so that the singer could make the next line up as he went along!

Been on holiday this week so I've had to resort to itv4 for my fix, these pair have been chronic.
Got right fed up of hearing about the golden jersey of leadership. The clean bottle thing did my head in, Paul referring to the race as 'The Amgen Tour', Tommy D, Matty Goss, the Kenda banner...
Home now so I can watch on es tonight, Carlton never sounded so appealing!Saracen Tenet 3 - 2015 - Dead - Replaced with a Hack Frame

Hah - I knew my 30-year old degree in Russian would come in handy one day...
If the Russian name is spelt correctly on Wikipedia (Денис Николаевич Меньшов), then it's pronounced roughly as "Dyenis Son of Nicholas Myenshov" - the 'e' is 'ye', the second syllable is a long 'i' (almost 'ee') and 'ш' is 'sh', not 'tch' as the commentators pronounce it.
I think it's possible that the French have called him 'Dennee' because that's how 'Denis' is pronounced in French. Not sure where the 'tch' comes from as French 'ch' is normally soft not hard...0 -
Sorry but the sponsorship thing really is nt their fault - have you ever watched a National american sports game (NFL/NHL/NBA etc). EVERYTHING is sponsered by something and the commentators have to mention it when they talk about it! The Budweiser player cam, the Gatorade Time out, the Denny's Stats box etc etc
This is just american TV I'm afraid.....We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence
- @ddraver0 -
Try watching cricket IPL on ITV4, everything single thing is sponsored, 6s, catches, any decent moment.
I like Phil and Paul but they do make some basic mistakes sometimes, suppose there are a lot of riders to identify though.0 -

Yeah, but look at the team uniforms of the Big 4 sports - not a sponsor in sight. I like that. All Road/ Gravel: tbcWinter: tbcMTB: tbcRoad: tbc"Look at the time...." "he's fallen like an old lady on a cruise ship..."0 -

It's strange that the US have so far turned down that opportunity. Man Utd and Liverpool both currently earn £20m a year from shirt sponsorship.
Which in itself provides an interesting contrast with cycling. I watch football, not much, but a fair bit - I see it in the papers all the time. But I couldn't name the sponsors of either the aforementioned teams (I could now because I googled that £20m figure). While in cycling nobody has any doubt who the sponsor is. They may not know what they do, but the name is everywhere.
Sorry for going off topic. The 'elastic broke' there.Twitter: @RichN950 -

Just flicked over last night to find the ToC on Eurosport with Phil n Paul. Apart from continually saying "...in this Amgen Tour of California", Phil said "...and they really are an angry bunch of bike riders". Oh Phil how I've missed thee!0

It would appear that from the CBS 60 minutes programme aired last night that the USPS / Disco take on a "suitcase of courage" was in fact a "white lunch box" complete with EPO and 'roids :roll:Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0
-
I liked it when Ned mentioned something about them doing a good job of work with the commentary whilst Matt Rendell tried to stop himself laughing.
I found it interesting that Phil and Paul thought the big story on Friday was that Tyler Hamilton admitted doping again. They didn't even mention the fact he had shopped Armstrong.0 -
Can we throw Graham Watson into the mix too as another raging sycophant? Thankfully he doesn't say much, 'cos when he does he's an ar$e.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0
