So, I've Started Getting Knee Pain...

...and I don't think it's just a 'bike set-up' issue.
A month ago I walked the West Highland Way and after about four days (of a six day walk) my right knee was giving me quite a lot of pain – although oddly only while walking downhill. I rested it for a couple of weeks before getting the bike out for a gentle ride. After about an hour and a half it was once again very painful. An easy spin on the turbo last night seemed ok but it’s quite sore again this morning.
So I’m reckoning this is something that needs looking at – but where to start? GP? Physio? Butchers?

On the outside of the knee?m the walking downhill bit is a classic symptom of ITBS0

See the physio.
GPs useless for 99.99% of sport injuries.0 -
could be inflamed thigh muscle tendon from being partly contracted all the time (ie downhill) Rest, ice & physio asap would be my recommendation....could also be a knee cap tracking issue - same advice whatever - physio & diagnosis before you make things worse doing things suggested by internet know it alls!0

As above, see a Physio, although I am not 100% convinced they are the "fix all" soloution that people believe them to be, I spent ALOT of money on a physio for my ITB problems from running, and the issue never cleared up, so I gave up running and took up cycling!0

+1 for sports physio. I couldn't be bothered to wait for a GP referral so made a private appointment. Two appointments later I know exactly what my problem is and exactly what to do to fix it, well worth the money.0

Brilliant - many thanks, all. Will start looking into any decent physio / sports therapists in the area. As someone who's been fortunate enough to never suffer from aches, pains, pulls and strains it's a bit of a shocker. Must be age creeping up on me. :shock:0

If you're struggling try asking at Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club, rowers usually know where to find the best sports physios and the sports are disturbingly similar.0

Got sore knee too, was at Works Physio today. Pain is below knee on inside, it too was bloody sore going downhill. Because I've got one leg shorter than the other, right leg/hamstring gets tight which has caused inflammation of muscle going from inside leg over knee (shamed to admit it but came on whilst running). Treatment is Ice, stretching, acupuncture and strapping. Good idea to see Physio as they can also assess which muscle groups are under most strain.0

Try some stretches, glues, quads and hamstrings, this could relieve some of the tightness in these muscles pulling on your knee. Worked for me.Pinno, מלך אידיוט וחרא מכונאי0
