Hi everyone,

I am brand new to all this stuff and just built my first bike from scratch.
Learnt a lot in the process and made a few expensive mistakes. i.e. took apart a Sram XX shifter and thought it would be easy to put it back together. Curiosity eh?!

Just finished building her today. Just as I was finishing bleeding the last brake, I lost the bleed caliper screw down the sink! You have no idea what I didn't say when I saw it disappear, very quickly down the plug hole, like some kind of tractor beam.

Anyway, what do you all think?

Now I have no money left!!!

Good looking MTB, Reynolds fameset, stylish images. Smashing example!

I'm pretty sure that 50p won't make much difference balancing your bike up.

That looks brilliant! Why the full XX, but only elixir 5s if I may ask?

A good luck coin...2 grams extra for the downhill sections!

Yes XX stuff, but at the moment can only afford Elixir 5s. Hoping for some Hope stuff maybe in 6 months or so. It all works well and I just need to ride the bike now... a lot! Custom is always experimental...including geometry...

thanks for your praise and comments...

When the pic's window comes up so does a pop-up of some wind turbines and a message about saving energy or something. When you click on the close part of the pop-up a separate porn site's window opens.

You could always change photo hosting site. I use photobucket.

The pop-up no longer pops up for me. Even after deleting browsing history. Maybe they've sorted it at their end ?

It did prompt me to finally get around to sorting our computer's parental controls though.

Thanks Bonezy and Mr Cat, hi PeterPolo, i used a Canon 1d mk2 with 16-35 2.8 lens. No flash, i just used the ambient lighting in the car park and there was over head tube lighting.

I thought I had better make some good photos of the final build...sometines harsh sunlight can wash everything away. Always look to create subtle shadows...

  • is Whyte owned by Marin?
  • It does certainly appear so, and it would also explain the similar if not identical quadlink rear suspension setup, present on both brand's full-sussers :P

A quick Wiki search reveals this:
Since the late 1990s Marin has manufactured full suspension mountain bikes. Working with Jon Whyte, a British engineer who worked with Benetton Formula One racing cars in gearbox design, Marin developed a single-pivot rear suspension.

But I'm sure yeehamcgee will be along soon to enlighten us further :)

    Bloody sweet bike btw :D
  • thanks for the info Chris...and the compliments on the bike. Have you seen Whytes 2012 range...massive expansion including a new 29er..not to mention jump in prices!

    You're very welcome Mr T!

I have indeed seen the 2012 Whytes, I certainly wouldn't half mind a piece of that 146 X...

    Whyte-0301-640x426.jpg

    Bloody gorgeous! :D

It does appear that quite a few manufacturers are trying to get into the 29'er game, Whyte's does look very nice, the latest ones from that I've seen are Boardman, Canyon and the oddest one yet Cube's downhill one :P

Just got some nearly new Hope X2 Evo brakes....such beautiful engineering.
  • Now I have carbon forks and the bike weighs 5kg! UNBELIEVABLE
  • For the complete bike? 11lb?

I'll bet you a million pounds it doesn't!
  • Still a nice bike though.

You say you've added carbon forks, but you've been round here now long enough to know that without pics:
    A: This thread is useless
    B: It didn't happen

    ;)

I too will wager my ball bag that this bike weighs considerably more than 5 kg! Lightest HT bike ive seen is around 6.8kg and that is carbon dripping with all the best weight weenie gear going.

However, this is a gorgeous bike! Shame you swapped the forks!

Post up some pics so we can see it.
  • maybe he missed the 10. from in front of the 5kg

    still great looking steely
