Tbh as an entry-level FS the Banshee X is looking pretty good at £560...! Yes, yes, I know they're heavy but still...

Which would people say was better value? The Kraken at £300 or the Fury at £430?

The Fury hands down (imo) It's already good value at it's full asking price..

I was thinking this but then I thought it's another £130 which is almost half again...so where does it end??? I set out looking at bikes for around £300 and am happy with the spec of the Kraken for the money....it's by far better than what I expected to get :) After all a few months back that bike/spec was £500.

If your budget has always been £400'ish, then it makes sense to get the better spec bike for the initial money that you wanted to spend before you saw any sale prices.

As before, they are all good value. The Fury is a better bike, but value wise they are all about the same.

the 20% in shop price kicks in tomorrow.

    Does this have any significance?

I'm planning on buying a kraken tonight, I have to reserve and collect though and it won't be available until next thursday at the earliest in any of my nearest stores. Which sucks!

No mate, it's just that the 20% off was online only today...tomorrow every man and his dog in the shop will see it. I tried to put a 10% code I had through when I bought mine thinking it would jump up to 30% off...it didn't :( it just replaced the 20% code with the 10% code

Just to double check I'll look before and pick up and pay tomorrow lol.

Think these will be out of stock by the weekend, there were two in my local store...an hour later there were non!
  • Ah rite I see.

I rang a couple of the local halfords earlier as I've been told that if your a student you can also get 10% extra off with your NUS extra card. Thats at the till though. Which is fine if its a reserve & collect item which is in stock.

However, I've just been trying to 'reserve & collect' it, and none of the local halfords have it in stock. So you have to pay up front (naturally), before they send it to the shop. So I'm not sure if my NUS 10% discount will be applied, or rather, refunded when I go an pick it up?

    Any ideas?

In April... no point buying one to keep in storage for a year, I would wait until you are back and see what the market has to offer then.

Had a look in my local Halfords, was interested in the Kraken at that price but I got distracted by a Fury AM which was priced up at £399 which would be £319 with the 20% off. Is this a previous years model (or does the AM mean it's a different model), it was grey, had sram x 7, juicy 3's (i think, might have been Tektro Auriga) & Tora 318 fork. How does the Suntour on the Kraken compare to the Tora? (I've got Tora 302 on my GT & find it a good budget fork)

£304 for the Kraken seems a great buy (I'm tempted to get one for a commute bike) but I 'm not sure if the Fury AM is worth the extra (if they will apply the extra 20% discount) or is it a bit of overkill for my needs, what do you guys think? (I'll probably end up not getting anything 'cos I can't decide!)

  • Just registered after seeing the 20% off offer at Halfords.
Just getting back into shape after years of too many beers etc, and have been htting the Gym since last August. All going well but fancied getting a mountain bike again (last one bought 10 years ago).

Anyhow the Kraken at £303 seemed a very good buy for the spec and seems pretty well rated.

Luckily my brother in law works for Halfords and he was able to get another 15% off with staff discount, a bargain £257 ish.

I was initially looking at around £200 budget for a basic bike, for the amount of time I would really use it, but the Kraken at £257 with staff discount made it a no brainer.

Nearly got the Fury, but even with staff discount I couldn't justisfy it for the use the bike will get. Even the Kraken is more than I need

What do you reckon of the Subway 8 at £319???

Thinking about a commuter bike with hub gears but cant tell how much it weighs. At this price it becomes a bit of a pub bike, could even bring myself to spray some crappy paint on the frame to make it less desirable to thieves.

But is it any good? At the moment commuting on my MTB but have not done so for a while as I worry about theft and it needs more maintenance. Could carry on like this but it got nicked last November and although I managed to recover it, there was some damage, alot of hassle and now I am not so keen to leave it outside work.

With Alfine gears the Subway 8 is cracking value but if my current bike is better, I might just stick with that - I do have alot of serious locks now to help dissuade the thieves...

Cant try one in Reading and need to decide if it is worth a trip to Newbury where I have reserved one until the end of Today.

Also havent even told the missus I am thinking about another bike yet...

With this level of discount, and the fact that most of the carrera's are pretty decent bikes it's a case of spending as much as you can afford and making sure the bike is suitable for your type of riding.

Looking for a first MTB since a Muddy Fox 20 years ago. Was tempted by the 20% deal in Halfords and the Kraken - however as usual I've got carried away and now looking at bikes up to £1000.

I'm of the opinion that you should buy the best you can afford and then a little bit more. I don't plan on upgrading or getting a new bike for another 5 to 10 years - this will be used for popping to the shops, commute to work on odd days and maybe a weekend ride through the New Forest.

With that in mind - do I buy a Fury which seems to be everyone's bargain recommendation for around £500 - or take any one of the following:

    2010 Marin Palisades Trail £636
    2010 Marin Nail Trail £980
    2010 GT Avalanche 2 £450
    2009 GT Avalanche 1 £490
    2010 GT Avalanche 1 £550
    2009 GT Avalanche Expert £610
    2010 Cannondale Trail SL3 £560
    2010 Cannondale Trail SL2 £680
    2009 GT Zaskar Elite £700
    2009 GT Zaskar Expert £970
    2010 Scott Scale 70 £610

     :?:

That looks like the 2008 model if I'm right?
Lot of bike for the cash, but since the 20% off offer is online, you might not be able to order on the website.

Yea went in again today, they've started the 20% offer in the shops now so it was eligible but only a 16'' so slightly too small, hell of a lot of bike for £319 - gutted.
Looked at the Kraken again, looks good, not sure about the Suntour fork though.

Just something worth watching out for - the discounts on bikes may be on but they appear to have upped the accessories and component prices - I popped in today and got a couple of small bits and they went through the till at higher prices than the shelf ticket prices. Check your receipt!!

I should not have read this thread..

Thanks to Si1988 and others I'm just impulsed purchased a Fury for pick up tomorrow. Popped down the local Halfords to see the Kraken & Fury together, the prettier colour scheme and frame and the great reviews for Fury meant I was only ever going to pick it.

As roadie (who's sort of quit at the moment for running!) it wasn't quite in plan to buy from Halfords, especially as I've a cycle2work scheme voucher that unusable at there. I had been looking for a MTB at £700-£750 price points elsewhere but without any idea of what I wanted or why I wanted/needed that much bike. The gear review tells me the Fury will be enough of a bike for me. Still got the issue of what to purchase with the C2W voucher, probably a Brompton or commuter, plus any change can always buy gear :-)

Not a mountain biker at all but going to get a bike just to be social and use in the winter. I'm a road racer   and have no idea what to get.

Have seen these deals at Halfords and I'm not sure what bike to get as the kit is not dura ace or sram red!!!

Anyway what bike should i get, the fury, the Kracken or the Vengeance?????

    Cheers

They all have great specs for the price, just decide what price you want to pay! I'd go for the kraken for casual mtbing but the only main difference between it and the fury is an air damped fork instead of hydraulics and better hydraulic brakes (and the extra £140)! I did a lot of research into it myself, hope that helps.

Don't think you could go wrong with any to be honest.

I chose the Fury when they were a little pricier, but I'd probably be happy with the Kraken for a bit of fun riding with friends, no probs.

There's some decent mountain biking in Hata, which isn't too far.
