Has anybody got any routes/map/tips for Thorndon Park? I should be going on Monday to test my new bike. Thanks

Thorndon has lots to do but you need to know the area to get a route together.
there is a family route all around which is marked and also little bits around the forest which have markers.
You could start off from thorndon north, as you come out of main gate take one of the tracks from there and see where that takes you! thers markers pointing you back to north or south

Thanks Timma, I went before a few months ago and managed to get kind of lost. I have a leaflet that the park center gave me, I will take it with me and try to get a route together once I am there. Thanks

No problem, if you want a tour, check out or post on ' a regular ride in essex' in the rides section and I'm sure someone will be more than happy to show you about. I'm out of action for a while but this is where I was shown all the good stuff.

Thanks Timma, I am only starting (late starter at 49 I guess), I don't want to go with anybody right now as I probably be holding them back. I will give myself a few weeks (month??) before I hook up with others. I have got the fitness as far as i know as i go out on my road bike regularly and train for triathlons, but I have not got the technical side and the bollocks to follow some of those guys. I just want to find the best places, local to me for now, so that I can practice and enjoy myself. See you around

Yes definitely will take you on the offer, bear in mind that I have just started so I won't be the fastest guy around :o . I usually don't work in the week, so free during the day or I can do some evenings if the family let me escape. PM me whenever it suits you. I went this morning and it was good to try my new bike, went around in circle a little bit but I am sure that I have missed tonnes.

There's so much there I'll only be able to show you a small percentage, when you getused to it a bit more get out with the Saturday morning ride as robertpb has been riding there since the invention of the wheel, and it was him who invented thorndon!

Thanks VW, I can't unfortunately do WE as I work, shame because i know that a lof of rides take place at the WE. But like I have said I more or less free during the week, AM or PM (except Wednesday morning as I have my running club). Let me know when it is best time for you to go out and we could try to arrange something. Thanks

I'm in the same boat; not fit, no technique so don't want to hold anyone up. Guess I'll have to get used to getting lost, and hopefully find a good route through trial and error. I'll keep a look out for a lost RR 8.1 (9.1 owner myself).

Thanks for the maps VWsurfbum, I'll see if I can borrow an iphone/sat nav.

Would love to join in as I've just also started out and want to get around a few routes to enjoy my newly acquired Rockhopper SL.

    Sounds good. :)

Wednesday evenings are probably Ok for me as Surfette does some dance thingy on Thursday evenings.

I'm probably gonna get another Belfairs blast in today and the current plan is to hit Cherry orchard into Hockley woods with a couple of mates early tomorrow morning before the thunderstorms come in..

Also need to get myself a rack so I don't have to be taking out child-seats to flip car seats forward to get bike in the boot..

Looking forward to it chaps 8)

    Where's the kart track?

I went Saturday, got a bit lost again trying to find a good loop. Saw two others on mtbs but soon lost em. :(

I should be able to meet up Tuesday or Wednesday night, as long as you don't mind going with a beginner with little technical skill and even less confidence. Any other newcomers up for it? jeannot18? SurferEv?

I posted in the essex mtb rides section. I'm fairly new to this. I can do any evening this week at thorndon, just name the day. I probably wont be able to keep up, but i will give it a good go!

Did abt 10 miles over there yesterday.

It's super quick in places at the moment as it's been so dry.

    Loved it!
