I always wear cycling glasses to avoid the odd insect strike and to reduce the inevitable eye watering that seems to aflict you as you get older. I treat them as a 'consumable' item though.

They can fog up (which is a pain) when you stop at lights/junctions etc, and occasionally on low speed climbs but other than that, they're fine.

A mate vindicated my decision to stick with the 'cheap' option in the winter when he spent £150 on some Adidas glasses.

They have a very garish white frame and bronze tinted anti-fog lenses (which were f.. all use on the February day we met up for a ride). They also have specially designed features for this, are tailored for that, have 'comfort fit' inserts (whatever they may be!) and the leaflet claims them to have many other features and qualities.

Unfortunatley he dropped them a couple of days after we met up and scratched the lens. The replacement is a 'special order' at £175 +P&P - so bascially it's cheaper to buy a new pair.

I'll stick with my £25 Bloc Stealths and £9.99 replacement lenses.

Yep mate I fully agree with you - its not worth it if you aint loaded

Got my Bolle Contour Metal Smoked Lens Safety glasses CONTMPSF and used it for the first time this morning. I must say I was delighted that I wasn't crying on my ride to work. I really like them too. really cool looking for £11 of ebay

Quite a fan of eye wear for cycling:
Was cycling to work (no glasses), about 22-25mph and got the proverbial fly in the eye. Blinked and squinted for a split second and when I properly opened my eyes I was now doing 22-25mph at a 45deg angle towards the kerb. No time to swerve so just bunny hopped in fright, cleared the kerb, and the whole pavement and stuck myself into the hawthorn hedge leaving a Blue Meanie sized hole.
Dug myself out cycled on, handlebar slighty squint. When I got to work and changed I had picked up maybe 30 thorns into my legs, had to peel my longs off, blood soaked into socks. Still funny

Wear glasses, you know it makes sense.

Blue Meanie I am shocked that you had such an experience, but you are dead right. By the way how large a hole does a Blue Meanie make?

I bought some last year from Aldi, 3 sets of lenses too. Great as they are not just for show they are a safety item. Stops dust, bugs and the dreaded wind getting into your eyes.

Mine I think were about a fiver, why spend hundreds?

If a Blue Meanie dies in a movie and nobody sees it, did he die? What if i watch it and just pause half way through?

I had thorns stuck through my gloves (Ooh Glove!) and my goretex softshell, but stil smile when I pass the 'hole', which I pass daily, and it's getting smaller every year!

Eyewear essential on all journeys. Apart from the obvious risk of eyeball strikes; I did a sportive with my ordinary optical specs as my disposable lens tore in the morning and I'd no replacement. Couldn't put protective sunglasses over my specs.

Arrived at the finish aware the world seemed to be out of focus. Wind rush had dried my eyes out and a kindly St John's ambulance lass administered drops and sat with me til i could see and drive.

I had a pair of Tifosi Pave - great, light and three lenses. £40. The nose piece broke recently and couldn't get a part so bought a pair of Kuotafrom LBS for £30. Excellent but a bit heavier than Tifosi.

I have mild myopia (-1 prescription) and used to ride with no specs. However I just bought some prescription Oakleys (£240, polarised brown Straight Jacket) and they are absolutely fantastic, only problem being they are useless after dark, being sunglasses an' all.

So I am going to buy some plastic lensed, plastic framed glasses from 'specsdirect' or similar cheapo direct internet specs site.

I am a client of Specsavers. I wonder if they will do a pair of varifocals for me.
