I decided to use my HRM during a turbo trainer session a couple of nights ago, with the aim of doing intervals at different heart rates e.g. 1 min at 170bpm, 2 mins at 160bpm etc. However, as hard as i tried i couldn't get my heart rate above 145bpm. Why could this be?

Naturally low HR?, not enough resistance?, not pushing hard enough?, fatigued?, ill?

If 170bpm is anywhere near your max HR then you won't get it up that high within a minute. In short, HR is pretty much useless as a gauge for intensity for efforts less than several minutes.

Some folk find it more difficult to get their HR up on the turbo though so that could be a factor as well.

I think you need to try again with decent resistance and minimum 2 minutes pushing a 90 + cadence.... if you hr doesnt start to pop with that....
