Turns out that mitten originally meant a fingerless glove too.

    http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=mitten

    er..
    mitten
late 14c., from O.Fr. mitaine "mitten, half-glove," from O.Fr. mite "mitten," and from M.L. mitta, perhaps from M.H.G. mittemo, O.H.G. mittamo "middle, midmost" (reflecting notion of "half-glove"), or from V.L. *medietana "divided in the middle," from L. medius (see medial).

I read that as divided into thumb and hand, see picture above.

    from Wiki
mitten, glove that does not have separate fingers

    as regards
a woman's glove that extends over the hand but does not cover the fingers
    thats just a long cuff.

    read all about gloves:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glove#Mittens

Why has the cycling world adopted "mitt / mitten" for fingerless glove? Its plain wrong and I for one won't stand for it :D

But in French, the word Mitaine (or Mitt) is a fingerless glove which was originally made out of cat skin:

We like French terms in cycling.

I maintain if the end is open its just a long cuff, if the end it closed it becomes a mitten. Maybe the original mitten end was closed but the dimwit that was wearing it caught the end in the chain making a hole for the fingers to pop out.

My Specialized mitts cost me £24.99 and are tearing at seams of the base of the furry thumb (snot wipey) part and the mitt itself.

My last Specialized mitts lasted a good 3/4 years and cost £15.99 - £24.99. I blame the recession....

In terms of cleaning them I've now commandeered a pot and lid from the kitchen and boil any and all smelly cycling stuff (except shoes). The colour runs a little (as to be expected) but boiling water is the nuclear option of the fat sweaty smelly man.

Put a little detol in to add fragrance...

You don't think that maybe these are related? I'm fairly sure the label says 40˚ at most.

These are fingerless gloves, not mitts.

I've always known them as "track mitts", ever since I bought my first pair in the mid-80s. To me, "fingerless gloves" conjures up images like these:

I went for the Castelli S. Rosso Corsa's in the end. Others looked less rugged, or like they would be too hot. I also liked the fact that they have an adjustment strap. And the material used for the palm has better grip than others I tried.

    <3 Castelli

Was tempted by the Knogs though, very cool!

DDD, boiling water is probably what's destroying your gloves. I've found the best remedy for smelly gloves/helmet padding is a cool wash with a fabric conditioner. After that mine never smell. Need to do it every couple of weeks, but I think thats reasonable for items of clothing that get saturated with sweat twice a day!

Nah it was tearing before the boil. I also saw a guy with exactly the same gloves and exactly the same kind of tear. Plus i like boiling clothes, its kinda fun... like a reverse firestarter or something.

Think I might get some of your spesh mitts if they've lasted 3 years, that's not bad going ;)

Mine tend to fall apart, think they would last longer if I stopped using them to mop the sweat

Ahem, well I feel a bit foolish now.... These gloves need to be replaced after only 4 months. Where the leather section meets the seam in the corner with the gel pad has pretty much disintegrated. Not happy about that!

Take them back, four months for a quality premium product like Castelli would fit in the category of not fit for purpose.

I have these so far so good. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/castelli-s-due- ... er-gloves/

Well I've contacted Wiggle, and they've referred it to the returns office so I'll just have to see what they say about it. These are the gloves in their current state:

Definitely disappointed though, had expected better from Castelli.

I hope you're being sarcastic. I got a pair of the S Tre mitts mail order and they were HORRID - cheap, weird rubber webbing on the back, rubber ribbed pattern pinches and puts pressure on nerves.

I'm on a pair of giro LX mitts now and LOVE them. Padding is perfect, leather is beautiful and soft, and they've stretched so they fit like a... um...

Nope. Used Castelli for ages with no problems at all. Just ordered another pair - not the S Tre though as that rubber bit just looks wrong.

Good grief, that's worse than my retired 4-5 year old Spesh BG mitts that have been through the washing machine several times. Looks as though something has actually chewed them.

Make this point to Wiggle returns that's why you paid more and didn't go with cheapest option. Might also be worth checking the review to see what the feedback was up to the time you brought them. I'd also consider a letter to Castelli customer services stating the above too.

Is mitt quality getting poorer? I had a pair of spec BG gloves that Lasted for ages (until I lost them moving house) but my most recent pair are falling apart at the same seam as DDD mentions. They go through the wash at 40deg but given that both gloves are splitting on the same seam I'd say it's a manufacturing issue. I was going to try castelli next (lurve a bit of castelli), but sound like they're not much better...
