Lots of teams there with no hope of or pretentions to GC. Nibs v Mench v Bertie? Not much for the 150th...

Rodriguez, Anton and Scarponi are all potential top 5s I'd say. Not the best TT riders but fortunately this is a climber's Giro. A fair handful of 2nd level GT riders: Di Luca, Garzelli, Pozzovivo, Kreuziger.

Maybe some riders are put off by its difficultly and / or hoping Contador isn't riding the Tour so focusing all their hopes on that.

Thats like saying the Tour has only Andy v Frank! :)

As ff has kindly pointed out, there are a few strong teams, including the two under the police spotlight. Both have very strong squads.
I'll bet Gianni's boys will stir the pot, too. The Venezuelan Dwarf and Souper Sella will be in the mix.
Plus, Colnago have 3 guys who are flying up the Dolomites, as we type. :P

Nice to see Russ Downing getting a ride in a GT......I'm not a huge fan (although I have a huge amount of respect for him as a rider) but I'd definitely say that he's earned it.

I haven't seen the route but it is rumoured to be murderously mountainous. So why is Cav there?? I guess he could pull out before it gets too bad. :?

Pinotti was top ten last year. While the parcours doesn't really suit his talents, he's worthy of their backing as a GC guy.

Cav will go home after two weeks at the most. He'd be stupid not to. Although, he may have the problem of wearing the points jersey and not being able to quit until someone takes it off him.

Pozzato and Paolini dropped from Katusha squad. Rodriguez overall favoured over stage wins. Pippo not going to be happy at not getting a ride in his home GT.

Especially after the crap spring he's had. His Giro stage win last year was his only win of note last year, can see why the team are getting frustrated with him.

I cant really work out who they can really replace him with. Pozzato has had it rough for awhile. Does seem strange to leave him out all together though.

Yes, can't imagine why Katusha might not want one (two!) of their top Italians racing a hight profile GT at the mo.

Great to see Russ Downing get a grand tour start, but pretty poor that Britain's Pro team has only one British rider in a grand tour.

Also good to see Adam Blyth in there.

I really hope that Sky try and get Russ into some breaks as I think he'd stand a good chance of getting a stage win if he got into the right break. It would probably be Sky's best shot at a victory as Lofkvist is never going to be anywhere near the podium with that parcours.

Yeah, but personally, I think that anyone who finishes this particular Giro is going to be no good for the Tour, which is the big deal for British audiences (so that takes out Wiggins, Thomas and possibly Cummings*). There's not much in the race for Swift or Hunt to go for with a decent Italian as their main sprinter. Stannard is a classics specialist and Dowsett is too young, which leaves Froome and Kennaugh, both of which need to show some form. As Sky have Italian interests, the Vuelta is a better GT training ground.

*I think the Sky Tour team will be: Wiggins, Thomas, Uran, Flecha, Lofkvist, EBH, Zandio or Cummings and two Aussies (Rogers, Gerrans or Hayman)

I imagine sky may drop Uran for the tour and use him in the grio and vualta.
Can imagine sky putting a strong team for the TT. Whether it wins will be another. Wiggins, Cummings, Rogers, Flecha, EBH, Lofvist, Hayman, Thomas & Zandio. Be intereting whether they may throw Dowsett into the door just to help power the TTT along. Then hope Wiggo sucks some helps to get a top 10 if things pan out well.

For the Grio looks like stage wins and a hopeful top 10 target for Lovkist which is a massive ask. Seems brave they are putting Apponio in. Have they jsut given up on Henderson. Since his nightmare in the Tour Down Under (which did give Swift his chance) his has not been involved with much. Surpraised he wasn't put in for Roubaix consider he always seemed o have a decent engine and power for it.

I think Uran will do both the Tour and Vuelta. The former as no.2, the latter as leader. I don't imagine they'll pick Zandio without Uran.

Dowsett's too young - full stop. As for the TTT, for 20km TTTs you need riders who can repeatedly do 300-400m bursts, so sprinters and lead-out men (Sutton, Hendo) are as good as TT specialists.

Looks like HTC left their best sprinter at home so as not to set Cavy off on another crying fit. I wonder if the two of them will race together again, or will we see a re-run of last year when Greipel was left of the bus. I can't wait to see how this heats up.

Bennati really has no luck. Out of Giro due to a crash in Romandie causing: a broken collarbone, which had multiple fractures, as well as four broken ribs and a contusion to his lung.

Besides Michael Mørkøv and Alberto Contador, the Saxo Bank-SunGard team for the Giro includes Laurent Didier, Volodymir Gustov, Jesús Hernández, Kasper Klostergaard, Gustav Larsson, Daniel Navarro and Matteo Tosatto. The focus is solely to lead Contador to the overall victory, and here Mørkøv knows his own role well.

“We’re taking a lot of riders to help for the mountains, so it’s not my role to deliver Alberto there. I can deliver a really good effort for the TTT, and I expect to have to work a lot in the front if Alberto takes the leader’s jersey.

“I know it sounds weird to say, but it’s always been my dream to ride for a very good captain. Not since Lance Armstrong has there been as good a stage race rider as Alberto is today, so it will be very special for sure to help and look after him.”

If Alberto rides himself into the pink leader jersey, it won’t be the first time Mørkøv has tried to defend it. He tried that already last year when Richie rode in it. According to Mørkøv, it’s a completely different task that awaits him and his teammates this year.

“It was different with Richie last year when we knew that he couldn’t keep it to Milan. In addition, we were fortunate that both Caisse and Cervelo took on a lot of the work to control the field. When we start with Alberto this year, we risk riding in the front from the first day to the last, if the other teams say that we have the biggest favorite. In addition, we may risk that Alberto takes the Pink jersey early on, and that means hard work at the front. But that is also precisely what I’m good at.”

Not all teams have finalized rosters yet, but Michael Mørkøv can already identify the toughest competitors.

“Scarponi has been riding very strongly this year, so I see him as our biggest challenger. In addition, Nibali. The Giro is a very big goal for him and for his team, so those are the ones we should watch out for.”

Richie Porte to ride the Giro as Contador's bottle boy:

The new Italian sprint sensation, Andrea Guardini makes the Farnese cut, one presumes, by getting the required double stage victory in Turkey.

was just about to say about Guardini - why would the team leave him out, surely he's the best shot for stage wins after visconti?
