I regulary eat salad for my lunch at work. Thing is - its so much nicer with Mayo ! - last night I glanced at the fat conent of this - and I was staggered as to the amouunt - seems mayo is like a liquid mars bar !

Anyone got any low fat alternatives to mayo ?

  • A good dollop of Hellman's has approx. 15% of your recommended daily fat intake but less than 10% of the killer saturated fat allowance. I don't know about the light versions but it could be worth checking those out. Try looking at other stuff you eat and see if you can trade your mayo fat for something else.

Pizza Express House Dressing Light - you can get away with putting very little on, but still get the flavour.

Olive oil, you get use to it and you don't need much.

Mayo light is like death in creamy gelatinous form.

Get some decent EV olive oil, red wine vinegar, lots of salt and pepper...

Light mayo - I developed such a taste for it that I prefer it to the regular stuff which I found left me feeling greasy 20 mins after eating it...

Yoghurt, splash of olive oil, dash of vinegar, a little wholegrain mustard, salt and pepper and a pinch of sugar. Lovely.
  • Balsamic vinegar :D

Yep I agree with all the home made options. If you're pushed for time, just mix a bit of DECENT olive oil and DECENT balsamic vinegar together (don't go for the nasty cheap stuff - it'll just taste awful). If you're not going to be socialising, crush a clove of garlic in to the mix and mix it all up....

Greek style yoghurt is like a lump of lard! May be low fat Greek? Low fat mayo is simply full fat mayo with a higher water content - just buy full fat and mix tap water in, you get the same result. Most "light" or low fat commercial dressings are simply the full fat version with "water" listed as the 1st and hence, biggest ingredient.

Another thing that can help salads is adding fresh herbs (try roughly chopping mint, dill, parsley etc in) and pepper, or salad onions. Or peppery leaves like rocket or watercress. Also you could try dry roasting some sunflower, pumpkin seeds or pine nuts and mixing them in. Things like that add to the flavour and reduce the need for fatty off the shelf dressings...
