Ok i'll throw a serious one in here i used to ride when younger but when i was 18/19 had a big fall and broke 2 vertabrates in my back, broke ribs, shoulder, whiplash, concussion. This put me of riding bikes for good.
Anyway 3 years ago i bught a hardtail for comuting purposes and that was all i used it for, but last year the missus went visiting her mum in Florida for two weeks. The two weeks turned into 3 three months and in that time she told me she'd cocked up one night and got with someone else (i thought ok one night may be forgivable) but said that was it, it turned out she had moved in with him as he'd kicked out his wife and two young children. As you could imagine my head was a mess and i was spiraling into depression (one night i nearly ended it all) but it was after i'd dropped 2 stone in the space of 4 weeks my mate dragged me up too Llandegla to take my mind of everthing and it worked. I have gone from the brink of suicide 6 months ago too riding my bike every chance i get as i've found a release for all my emmotion/agression and anyone who rides knows traveling at speed only inches from trees really takes your mind off the issues of every day life.
I guess this is why hold Lllandegla so close to my heart as it was the first trail center i visited and i'm pretty sure if it wasn't for that first experience of Llandegla i doubt i would be typing this message now. I've found my love and it's the love of riding on the edge everytime you go outWhat if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? What if to get to heaven, you had to brave hell? What if everything you've ever wanted cost you everything you've ever achieved? Would you still go there?0 -
Muttly1981, so sorry to hear that, but so glad you found yourself.0

Same as everyone else on here -
The fitness.
The fun.
Appreciating the surrounding countryside.
Chance to forget about everyday stresses/strains etc.
...Oh, and having dog crap flicked up into my face, because that's such an enjoyable and thrilling experience, and I'd like to thank all the considerate dog-owners for awarding me such gratifying outdoor opportunities.0 -
Johnny Napalm, hold your horses!
Fitness has nothing to do with why I ride. I try to get fir in order to be able to ride more. I don't ride to get fit.0 -

Plain and simple I just love it, I don't think I could live without it, the only thing that limits me is the fact I can't get to any other trails other than the ones on my door.

I only started riding about 4 years ago with a mate who had been into it for years-he used to race XC, the full lycra experience. He had been trying to get me to ride for years and I never did, too many other things going on, mainly too busy wakeboarding, but then I moved house to literally round the corner from him and kind of ran out of excuses. I've been hooked ever since. I started off thinking it would keep me fit in winter and then ended up like YeeHaa said, keeping fit for my bike rather than because of it. I ride up stuff so I can come back down again not for the satisfaction of cleaning a big climb although someone pointed out the other day that climbs don't seem to bother me anymore. Mainly it's just another good excuse to be out in the woods and up mountains without "going for a walk" (although as my Mrs points out I spend half my time carrying my bike up stuff that isn't rideable so it is walking really).
The weird thing is a year after getting me out on a bike, my slightly more "descent orientated" view of MTB rubbed off on my Lycra XC racer friend and he buggered off to Portugal to set up a DH/freeride centre and now won't swing his leg over his bike unless he's just got it off a trailer.
I'm lucky to live 4 miles from Grizedale forest so I make the most of it as much as possible, I get to ride at least every other day and I'm lucky because the Mrs is now hooked as well.
Anyway I'm off to dodge bank holiday walkers in football shirts. Everybody have a good weekend...0 -

I won't lie it was the worst thing i've ever had to go through but and its a BIG BUT i have discovered the greatest sport/past time and i really do feel i'm fillng my time with something i enjoy. As i say there is nothing that focuses the mind better than going 20mph only iches away from treesWhat if your dreams and fears existed in the same place? Lots of reasons for me, chance to get out of the house get some me time, and relax, also gets me fit and makes up for the lack of other excercise i do! I also love the tech aspect of it, i love tinkering with my bike setting it up differently and seeing what its like.
Just love riding full stop0 -

Fun, thrills and exploring the countryside, finding trails, in the main.
A bit of exercise is a reason down the list but it's in no way the main reason. Though I do appreciate the fitness I get from slogging up the Surrey Hills. I hate hill climbs, I ride for the downs not the ups, and I'm not a fitness freak at all, but doing them on a near weekly basis does mean I can cope better with climbs and other things generally.0 -
I live in Scotland.....What a waste it would be to be a footballer!
