Yo Fab, that's how to be a heavily marked man and still win by a mile.

Did all the work to close down Schleck and still had it in his legs to beat the others.

    Nice work Joaquim.

Rabobank can suck on that. ZERO for them, nada. No honour, no placings.

Great comment AFX - don't see much teddy-chucking from Gilbert, grabs the race by the scruff and takes it away from the others!

    Err, why?

No wonder UK races have a rep for never letting anyone get away ever.

"I'm curious to see how Gilbert will deal with the pressure. After the Brabantse Pijl, he's become the Cancellara of the Ardennes. The way Gilbert won on Wednesday, reminded me of my victory in the E3," he said.

"Like me in E3, he had fewer rivals in Overijse that he will face on Sunday. But he shouldn't be afraid of me riding on his wheel. That's not my style of racing. I actually wish him the best of luck."

That's one almighty inference to make from one part-time fan's gripe. Hey, if they're content to sit in the wheel and be inconsequential, all the best to them.

He should be disqualified for that shirt and tie combo.

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

Ah it's a common gripe for English speaking fans.

Monster effort by Gilbert and he's obviously incredibly strong in this type of race at the moment.

Does he race smart? I often wonder whether he'd win more if he rode a little cleverer, and didn't do so much work himself. I realise that makes him the darling of the 'Honour, truth and anti-wheel sucking brigade", but I just wonder whether he's missing wins by doing too much?

I enjoyed his effort today, it's great to see the man doing the work win. Slightly amused at the feel good that Gilbert did the work and got the win, whilst Cancellara seemed to be regarded with almost spite for working so hard and failing.

Given that he still won, you have to think Gilbert did race smart. He chased enough since no-one else would, but timed well enough that he wasn't burried before he got to the Cauberg.

I meant more generally, rather than today. His effort in the Ronde a couple of weeks ago for example. Another race last year that escapes me (uselessly vague I know), I remember thinking at the time he's strong but it seems too early. Sean Kelly in the Eurosport commentary was saying he thought Gilbert was doing too much work today.

Sean's a little keen on sitting in the bunch though. He's a Freire type when it comes to tactics (prepare to lose in order to win). I remember he's quite scathing of those riders like Brut ALWAYS go into breaks where they'll never win on those sprinter fest stages.

Maybe that's why he never won Flanders

This is a fair point and has been mentioned before by some people. He often does more than his fair share as they say he gets anxious.

Personally I think he is doing just fine, cleaning up pretty much everywhere. His riding also makes him MUCH more likeable, respected and viewable. I'm sure that helps riders pay also.
