    By doing more of them in training.

    I think we're talking about two different things here - I assume the OP means immediate recovery in the minute or two after high-level exertion? I think this is just down to basic cardiovascular fitness and HR recovery rate, and Zacharia has it right.

    If you mean recover WHILE riding - then it comes down to fitness. Do more of them, get fitter and your body will recover faster from them.

    if you mean how to recover after a training session - recovery drink, fluids, protein/carb meal, good night's sleep. Massage if you can get it!

    I find a massage after every ride does me good.
