It's like reading the Guardian...just as bad as the Daily Mail (especially the comments sections)

as an aside, always worth bearing in mind, the guardian was set up, and still is run, as an independent trust. with the revenue earned from it's media group going to ensure financial and editorial independence. it's about the only rag with the ability to go, do, investigate, report independently in this country.

Don't get me wrong. there are a lot of decent journalists there but there is also a lot of crap. The Apple love in and rumours of an ad deal there don't do much to help the reputation.

It's quite a juxtaposition of things really too, politely asking sexual boudaries, like a rapey Colin Firth

"I say my good lady, I wondered if you would be most put out by the itroduction of my penis into your an@l cavity with thrust and vigour until it became ruptured. Then afterwards we are to attend a luncheon at lady Catherines"

yeah, the crudcatcher is not the place for polite questioning really

  • Personally, I would stay as you are/have been.

However, if his beliefs started to affect me or my family I would have to tell him to stay away.

I'm not too bothered about other's beliefs/sexuality, but when someone tries to force their beliefs on me or their beliefs start to affect me, I will say something.

Religious preachers are something I really despise. Fair enough, you're religious, but I'm not... so either shut it or go away.

Colin Firth comes across rapey anyway. I think of this as something that Prince Phillip would say to the Queen.

  • see i think its dodgey ground, i think people being intolerant is just the way of the world, but i think when its advertised its on shaky ground, and bearing a swastika surely isnt wise, as thats offensive to just about anyone who isnt white, blond blue eyes? for example if you bear a swastika or do a nazi walk or salute etc, you can be arrested in germany because it is so offensive

personally i would distance myself from him, and im aware that that is intolerant, but i think if your going to be intolerant, surely its better to be intolerant of racism/sexism/homophobia that to be any of those?

true, they had to broaden things out for the american market during the Bush years, but that fell into their lap by virtue of large chunks of the american population not believing a word their own corporate media were telling them and turning to foreign media for any semblance of truth. but it has no bearing on what and how the paper ultimately reports, they've lost large corporate advertising before and will do again. there is a lot more tolerance of waffle than there ever was tho.

You have to agree though that a lot of the people who end up commenting are totally up their own arses though. The Anti Nuclear, Anti police, the "lets blame everything that happened under the last labour government on the tories" brigade, the over the top feminists, etc. Also the football pages have gotten a lot worse over the past couple of years with the likes of hayward and Wilson churning out crap every day and louise taylor doing puff pieces for Qatar ahead of the world cup desicion (the all expenses paid trip to Doha for her certainly helped form that opnion. There is a lot of good in that paper but there is a lot of crap as well and the sensationalising you see now is no different to the Daily Mail (e.g. any article involving Top gear)

It was traditionally a northern working class (left leaning) paper, that's it's roots so you'll get that in part and you've got an entire generation who grew up with 80s thatcher, so the paper has changed a fair bit but peoples attitude might not have done on certain things (and rightly so in a lot of cases). But what makes me laugh my bollocks off most is the bulk of these hardcore 'commenter's' on these online papers spend more time on the 'opposing' papers 'blogs' than they do actually finding out what's really going on, sucked onto a mindless hamster wheel of left / right paradigm political point scoring. Some very good stuff comes out occasionally but it's eye gouging, head banging stuff mostly. .....ideal for trolling 8) ....which also goes on a lot.
