there's a guy who lives on my street, i've said hello to him in passing and sometimes stop to just pass the time of day with him, he seemed like a nice fella.
not too long ago he shaved his head and i saw hime with a 'worldwide white pride' t shirt on and the other day he had on a tshirt with some sort of nazi logo (swathstikka and some other junk)
now he still says hello and wants to chat but i don't want to know if he's some sort of racist neo nazi!! so i've just mumbled and kept on walking, do i just blank the guy or explain that i don't want to know if he is a racist nazi? :?

So whats changed? I have friends who are racist, I don't agree with it in any way shape or form, but that's up to them. Opinons are like arseholes, we've all got one but there's a time and place for airing it.
So long as they don't ram their views down my throat it's not an issue.

well that's where we're different, they wouldn't be my friends if thye were. everyone tells the odd slightly racist joke which TBH i don't like but take it in the jest it was meant but if a mate of mine turned up in a t shirt bearing a racist slogan or nazi symbol i'd be questioning our friendship!!0 -
@welshkev. Don't get me wrong I have put an end to friendships with people that wouldn't stop harping on about their views and how they were "right" and I was totally bonkers for not agreeing.
The circumstances regarding myself are rather unique to say the least!

I'm with DD on this. If you were friendly before then nothing should change his views aren't yours and he certainly doesn't share yours. If he doesn't push opinions onto you then he is not causing you any harm, if he tries to push his views onto you knowing how you feel then he is no friend.
I would be more concerned about those who don't show an outward racist view to those who they know would object and put them in their place but rather stir up these emotions in the week and easily led.0 -

Everyone is racist! FACT! If he's not directly offending you, who cares. By not talking to him you're just as bad0 -

Having said that I would not actively fall out with a neigbour over it. If I was on simple "hello, how's the pitbull?" terms with said imbecile then I'd continue that surface relationship. Why cause ruptions where none are needed? You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.0 -

I agree with dd, blanking him because he has a different opinion is a bit far, no matter what his opnions are. A civil hello is all that's needed, you don't have to be best friends, but blanking him totally I wouldn't. I think it leads by example that you are willing to interact with all people0

I would go with your initial feelings. Anybody who has a swastika on their shirt is a total d1ck and talking to them is not worth the waste of oxygen.
I would ignore them, or if that's not possible acknowledge their miserable existence with a nod and leave it at that.I don't do smileys.

So that then makes you a bigot right? Not a personal attack on your character I just can't see why welshkev should force himself to blank the guy just because he wears a particular t-shirt and shaves his head.
I mean I wear a Man U t-shirt so surely I should be avoided by every single non Man U supporter on the planet just because of my view that they are the best team in the world?

you carry on doing exactly what you're doing and if it becomes clear(er) that he is actually a racist and you're not comfortable with that, then it's time to not speak, and if he asks why, then you very politely tell him you ain't comfortable.0 -
^^ this ^^
i wouldnt say anything at the moment but i put it to everyone here that if this guy was qwandering round with dodgy kid pictures or pro woman abuse logos on it you'd steer well clear. In my opinion racism is just as bad!
the whole nazi logo thing should be kept well away, it affected millions of people (including my grandad as a polish man) through to people today.0 -

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ not this. (a stupid and totally irrelevent shallow empty point/arguement)So whats changed?
well whats changed is the fact that he is either really stupid, ie he bares the marks and symbols in public with the belief that that it makes him look hard but doesnt really understand the significance of the logo. or he really has some messed up idologies which he is quite happy for everyone to know about. either way he's not going to add anything positive to your life and anything other than a civil hello is a waste of your time.........which could be better spent riding your bike.RockHopper Expert ---- (the bike not me)0 -
I think you are all predjiduce how do you know hes not a recent hindu convert???
having a racist or fascist opinion or belif could be potentially be argued or reasoned, you just dont agree. But the addition of a swastika and aligning with the nazi brand of fascism is just beyond contempt, i personally wouldnt acknowledge him0 -
That's a more balanced view. I just think treating him as an outcast doesn't achieve anything. Educating and reasoning with people is the better way. I wonder how many of the White supremicists that are about would be totally different if they hadn't fallen into the flock they have? Not all of them, granted but I bet a fair percentage are just sheep.
Failing that, you could black up and see if he talks to you still0 -

Yo, DD.
Accepting of intolerance towards other races. That's what nazism and fascism means in the real world (couldn't give a rats ass about the ideological implications - just cutting down to the nitty-gritty). Act the part, be the part.
Accepting of intolerance towards women makes someone a b*****d, right?
Why should I stay friends with someone who accepts intolerance towards women. Or children? Simple, I don't.
Then the f**k am I going to stay friends with someone who accepts intolerance on the grounds of race. Hating on women is no different from hating on different races.
Replace 'intolerance' with 'violence'. The arguement just gets better
That makes me a bigot? I'm cool about that. I reackon I'd be holding the higher moral ground. 8)
Welshkev - feeling for your little dilemma, there. I know what I'd be doing, but I'm a not a people person. Wouldn't want to be speaking for you.How would I write my own epitaph? With a crayon - I'm not allowed anything I can sharpen to a sustainable point.
Disclaimer: Opinions expressed herein are worth exactly what you paid for them.0 -
Given he lives on your street, probably best to keep it civil and say hello but don't show any interest in what his t-shirt says or whatever.
If you're really not comfortable with it then keep it to yourself, but try to avoid the bloke if you can. If he's not pushing his views down your throat then no point taking him up on it - more trouble than it's worth. If he does raise it with you then you need to politely tell him you don't agree, but each to his own."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." I think it's more about accepting someone's right to hold a different opinion to you rather than accepting someone's a racist/sexism/homophobe. In theory, you could turn it on it's head. I don't approve of homosexuality but I'm not going to ignore/blank anyone who is homosexual as they entirely have the right to have their own beliefs about what is acceptable and what isn't. As long as someone isn't imposing what they believe on me or causing distress to people that matter to me then I have no problem.
You obviously have your own opinion about it and that's cool too. I'd avoid jumping to sensationalised responses to DD's posts as it is implying she is facist. To me she is being tolerant of all positions.Formally known as Coatbridgeguy0 -

as an aside, always worth bearing in mind, the guardian was set up, and still is run, as an independent trust. with the revenue earned from it's media group going to ensure financial and editorial independence. it's about the only rag with the ability to go, do, investigate, report independently in this country.0 -
