So I don't. I trim back to stubble and a goatee a couple of times a week or so.

Keep shaving. I have to shave every morning for work, and after 6 months it stopped rashing - your skin toughens up.

Decleor do a great pre-shave oil and post-shave moisturiser.
    Works well, Chris. Works well.

    Am considering shaving it off.

In an ideal world I'd have permanent stubble, but that look doesn't go down well at work. I have the razor rash thing bad, for me its not the shaving, its when the stubble starts to grow back that the problems occur. Experience has taught me that no wet shave product in the world can prevent an outbreak of mini acne a couple days later, so I stick to an electric shave and resist the temptation to get super close - means I usually have a bit of 5 o'clock shadow by the end of the day but it beats the alternative...

I do tend to grow a beard whenever I'm on holiday then take great pleasure in going through the various stages of beard removal: goatee, bandito, tache, Hitler, gone.

I have gone five weeks without shaving and have grown a decent beard as a result - every man should do it at some point.

Most importantly though, beards kill sharks:

It's dirty, unkempt, probably smelly, full of dribble and old food, and must get pretty bad covered in sweat....

Dribble, old food and sweat?! Erm just use shampoo or soap, surely?

In my experiance, the "gentlemen" with the beards usually have an aversion to shampoo or soap products. And don't call me Shirley!!!

This thread is in need of a poll:

    Clean Shaven
    Stubble
    Short
    Full-on

I alway think that people who don't sport occasional beards probably can't get a decent one going.

You may be confusing cause & effect. Blokes with an aversion to soap are unlikely to be regular shavers.

because my hair falls out and re-roots on my chest i have to shave my head (otherwise i look like gollum ala Lord of the Rings with long straggly hair) if its a special occasion i razor my head too for that slip stream look.

best way i have found to shave is have a nice hot shower, after 10+ mins in the shower apply shaving oil to what ever you want to shave, then shave with the grain

Having a beard stops me from looking like a 12 year old boy.
  • i want to grow a beard but the missus won't let me she hates the scratchy feeling. but everyone should sport a beard at least once in their lives. i like the look of dusty hill from zz top don't think it would go to well with my shaved head.

I have just started to regrow a beard since I received word of my new draft to a posting within a Royal Marines barracks. On a barracks where everyone wears green, wearing a beard for a male sailor is what will stand you out from the bootneck side when the uniforms are essentially the same in all but rank slide.

Nik on the other hand is not a fan of beards and is protesting already.

Nope - all of those can apply to females too. Perhaps not their beards....

surely the point of a "beard" is to have something to offset the "hat"?

Have you tried shaving with a DE (saftey) razor? The modern multiblade razors work by lifting and cutting which can irritate the skin and then leave the hair too short so you get ingrowing hairs. Plus blades for a DE razor are much cheaper than all thew new fangled multiblades. It takes a while to get your technique down but worth a try. I changed over recently and wont go back. Also use a proper shave soap/cream and brush. There are some good technique vids on youtube. Search for mantic59 I think...

Boots do a cheapy Wilkinson Sword DE with spare blades if you want to give it a try. Once you get into it there are plenty of specialist trad shaving shops online...

After watching Resevoir Dogs I thought I'd try shaving with a straight razor (also known as a cut throat).
I bought it, waited for a few mm of stubble, lathered up and gave it a go.

I, very tentatively, shaved my right cheek and was instantly impressed with how close it was and how smooth the action was (no 'tug and pull' as the advert says), so I carried on with the right side of my face and continued being impressed.
I then moved over to the left side of my face and as I shaved I noticed a line of blood seeping from the right side of my chin. I stopped shaving and washed all of the lather off of my face so that I could investigate the damage.

I had a very, very thin flap of skin about 2cm long and about 3 mm deep. No pain whatsoever from the cut, just the sting of the lather in exciting my nerve endings.

Once the cut healed there was no scar at all as the cut was so thin and I now I just use that razor to cut the ears off of policemen I kidnap.

Never tried a straight razor - that is a whole other skill level. Did you ever give it a second go  Think they take a lot of looking after as well, sharpening etc...

More people should definately give DE razors a go. No tug and pull, no ingrowing hairs, v cheap blades and a much closer shave although it does take a bit longer....
