The only benefit of shaving legs is for when you crash.

I disagree with that.. The main thing why I do it in the summer is that it makes putting on the all day sun block a whole lot easier , otherwise all the hairy bits look ghostly white.. Last summer I got fed up with picking dead flies out of the hair on my arms so shaved them as well - now that did feel strange at first :) .. Timely post though as I have been thinking I must get busy with the razor now the sun has come out to play in 2011 ....

    Options!
    1) Shave both legs
    2) Shave just the one leg
    3) Shave just the outside of my legs, leaving the inside nice and hairy
    4) No shaving

    5) Reassess the situation after a few less beers.
mostly not being mocked by one group or the other.......
I'm sorry but do you not think that option 2 and 3 could possibly lead to everybody mocking you for looking strangely ridiculous.
You also missed option 7 If you were to shave the left hand side of both legs and ride your road bike on the right your friends. And ride with your mtb on the left showing the hairy right hand side.
Now that would make perfect sense. :D  :?

Don't they wear wetsuits in tri's?

Wetsuits are only compulsary in open water swims where the water temp is below a sett level (think its 25C for most or something like that) and if its warm enough not to wear then it's a waste of time in T1 if you're wearing it!
I can confirm you are correct. Good guess!

    Now that's just silly. :D

The "Veet dip" is what you want: lowered by a crane into a vat of Veet, just leaving your head above the level.

Just make sure that you don't do a Christiano "Burnt Penis" Ronaldo, that's all ........

I shave mine when the wife is in the house, I just don't do it in the living room whilst watching TV

My wife prefers mine shaved, though she does get a little pissed off when mine are smoother than hers

Do the hairs grow back thicker and more rapidly when constantly shaving - or is that just a myth?

No - its real and part of teh reason I stopped shaving and started waxing.

For risk of sounding a bit gay, shaving only cuts the top off the hairs and leaves the roots. The roots and hair then grow back stronger and harder (it's why when you start shaving you have bum fluff on your face and then its grows into manly stubble that itches).

Also means that as it grows back you get stubbly legs and the wife starts to hate you even more than she already did.

Veet dissolves the hairs but not the roots, so same issue.

Waxing rips the hairs out from the root: the first couple of times are painful, but then the hair gets weaker as it doesn't have time to root again. You also end up with finer, less hairs on your legs as there are less hairs in there in the first place, so it gets easier and easier as you wax more.

You also get a longer period between having to wax again then shaving.

Its why birds can wax away no worries while watch Corrie, Dancing on Ice or whatever trash they are into.

You also don't end up with stubbly legs so the wife has one less reason to deny you lovin'. But don't worry, she'll soon find something else to take its place …...

Right enough gayness: I'm off to do something manly like blow something up.

Sorry - Yossie's answer is incorrect.

After shaving or veeting hair grows back the same as it did before you did either of these things. It may appear thichker/darker because as it emerges from the follicle it is now being viewed against a hairless background and also points stright up, rather than curling over - again making it look thicker/darker.

I believe (but don;t know) that over time waxing can lead to thinner hairs / less hairs because of damage to hair follicles.

Oooh - blimey: I take it all back. I have been lied to all these years.

    Sorry.

Bizarrely enough, I did a quick Google on this, and there are whole websites dedicated to hair removal - WTF???????????????????

I completely agree with your comments on why waxing could be the better option

Well after all this talk, I've been and gone and done it (while wife was dropping kids at school of course :D ).
Now I'm ready for 65miles of sun on my hairless legs at the weekend.

Who and where are all of these women who love men's shaved legs? After 20 years of doing it I haven't met 1 single woman who likes it. Not one!! Most of them are pretty damn rude about it, too. Just the other day a girl said to me that there is nothing more disgusting than a man who shaves his legs. An ex actually forbid me from shaving them as it '"grossed her out". I felt like a freak riding with hairy legs. Always thought that other cyclists would think I wasn't a pro :-)

Option 2. And how do you decide which leg? You need to work out whether you do more left hand bends or right hand bends. Shave whichever leg is on the outside most of the time. This will make you faster overall as your cornering speeds will increase.

Mine will be silky smooth tomorrow for the first time in 15 years so I can go on the club run on Sunday with lumpy, ghost white legs with razor slashes all over them and look good in lycra  I'm just hoping they grow back quickly at the end of the season as I have to wear a kilt for a wedding on New Year's Eve and shaved legs plus skirt may be taking it too far!

Wax - Veet is painless but it's really horrible, thick, smelly sludge. It's vile.

I was going to post the same response when I read it.

I htink the myth has come about over years of young guys getting used to shaving. When you've only just started shaving hair growth is slow an uneven and typically someone will say it will speed up the more you shave. What then happens is that instead of new hairs comming through and joining longer hairs barely noticed, all the hair is cut to the same length and grows together which magically looks like the shaving has caused more to grow. And of course the more you shave as a youngster the more the hair will come back and thicker, simply because your growing up!

Ok, so none of that probably makes sence when typed out but makes perfect sense in my head!

Recently did my legs again for the first time in years.
Went over them with clippers first and then Veet which worked fine.

That would be quite easy really. after many years on the mtb going through bushes, for some reason my left leg has very little hair left on it, but the right i can still get away with calling manly.

FIgured no one would notice the shaving / lack of it on the legs.

I think it maybe a case of giving it a go....... Think the Mrs is out to the football on tuesday night so i may give it a shot then....

You should only shave your legs if you answer 'yes' to the following question:

    Q: Are you a woman?
