Snacking

I am looking to try and drop some more weight and so am looking at my diet. I see a lot of people talk about eating seeds, nuts for snacking. When in Morrisons at dinner I had a look at the different mixes they had available and picked up 150g bag of cashew nuts/raisins/diced apricots/sunflower seeds. All of the different mixes seemed to be quite high in fat, sat fat, sugar and calories? Is there something I’m missing?

nuts are very high in calories.-not so sure about seeds
imo theres two things you can do about snacking(and i have lost two and a half stone)
    1)eat fruit
2)try self control- no one said it would be easy

if youre banging out a lot of miles its definitely easier to lose weight-just dont overcompensate for calories burnt.

My love of nuts and mature cheddar cheese are the reason I'm not 60kg.

Nuts, seeds and dried fruit are better than e.g. chocolate bars, but unless you're burning a lot of calories riding your bike then you can't eat many if you want to lose weight. I actually weigh mine and bag them up because if I just graze on them I eat loads without even noticing. A 200kcal snack of mixed fruit and nuts is only about 40g, which is bugger all.

Its all too easy to consume a lot of calories in fresh fruit as well.

nuts & seeds do contain a far bit of what we're taught is' bad' for you - but they also contain a lot of trace elements , minerals etc that are good for you. So if you swap rubbish snacks like crisps & sweets for nuts and dried fruit or fresh fruit you get a whole lot more 'goodness'.
there is a belief that the healthy fats in nuts avocados etc are better for your arteries and fat loss metabolism but whether its just hocum I've no idea.

Obviously if you eat too much of anything you will eventually go up in weight

All this nonsense about diets there is no substitute for not eating junk it's ok to eat a burger or a couple of pints of beer but not all the time, people have made fortunes trolling out all this hype its not easy but it can be done with self control and exercise.

For a good slow release snack I go with Rough Rolled Oat Cakes with some peanut butter.

Two of them mid-morning or mid-afternoon stop any hunger and get me through to the next healthy meal.

More water too. Hunger feelings can often be de-hydration.

Not so easy though if you want to continue to ride hard and/or race your bike. Then it does take a bit more thought.

Just due to the massive amount of calories in nuts, I try and avoid them. No matter 'how good' they are.

+1 to fruit for snacking. Lots of goodness in them. Quality food in is the way forward.
