My gf is very fortunate in that she either rides my carbon 456 or whatever demo bike we have in the shop. The only downside is that she now wants a v. expensive carbon FS 'of some description' for mtbing...0

I'm 5ft 2, t'husband is 6ft 7. Sadly sharing bikes isn't an option - he'd look like he's riding a BMX and I'd look like I'm riding a gate.
I've got the most expensive bike in the house, but he has more of them! :P0 -

Ha ha, looks like I completely missed that angle!!Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of moments that take your breath away....

women ride bikes?0

My OH has a brand new Camber Elite courtesy of her work's C2W scheme - I only got my used Trance X4 about 4 months after, and hers is still better than mine!
As she put it - you want me to come out on the bikes? Fine, I'd better have a good one then!::'11 Pitch Pro::0 -
My wife does just as much riding as me but isn't as strong, so she gets the lightweight bling bits and I make do (sort of). Makes it more enjoyable for me to have her keep up if we're going to ride together. Plus I get to spend on bling, I just don't get to use it.0

Here's food for thought re. girls not keeping up with the blokes and the issue of nice versus crappy bikes:
I got myself a v nice light MTB, 10.5kg. But I only weigh 56kg
My boyfriend weighs 92kg. So, all things being equal (which they're not - men tend to have higher proportion of muscle than women), for him to have an "equivalent" weight of bike, his bike would need to weigh about 16kg!
I don't think he'd be too pleased about that and certainly wouldn't be able to keep up with me.
So, we really can't expect a smaller lighter person to keep up unless they have a considerably lighter bike than the bigger musclier people.
Could this be a factor in why some girls don't enjoy MTBing as much?

It's only fair to comprimise. Let your ladyfriend have your 6" bike on the ups and then swap and give her your hardtail on the downs.0

Hmmm, dunno. I weigh 65kg and am probably fitter and faster than most of the other guys I ride with, who all weigh more than me. And it seems to be that the more they weigh, the bigger the difference!
Just because someone weighs 50% more than you doesn't mean that they're 50% stronger/fitter/faster. But it does mean they've got 50% more weight to lug around.0 -

She was riding it like a lady who was a bit p!ssed off she was struggling on a shopper whilst her hubby has blasted up hill on his nice spangley mountain bike
maybe on a proper bike she'd have kicked his ass ? !0 -
Bout to say i don't buy into the weight thing so much there.
Mostly because i've had my arse handed to me by a couplle of ladies i know on the downs and up's. And the extra muscle is only of so much use on the downs, the rest is far more about technique.
If a lady is 5-10% slower than there partner maybe i would take that but anything more, thats more to do with personal determination to be fit0 -

In cycling (as a lot of sports) its power to weight thats the most important factor.....lot of muscle = lot more weight = harder work !
Sometimes being small has its advantages
The pros weight very little (just look at Wiggo for his weight his near anorexic) by my life is he fast ! Pantani "The Pirate" was small but kept well up with the big boys (someones now bound to mention the issue with the drugs !)0 -
who would possibly want to go mountain biking with there missis???? imo wife can stay at home and leave me have fun with the lads.......Giant Trance 1
Live to ride0 -
i donated my old stumpy to the wife and she loves it. its still my bike of course and i still prefer riding alone but its nice on the odd occasion when we go out together and i love it too much to sell even though it doesnt get ridden by me that often.0

miss notax wrote:Riding the Brechfa blue trail at the weekend, and about 2/3rds of the way around we caught up with a lady we had seen leaving the car park riding with her hubby. She was clearly not having a particularly fun time on a fireroad climb, on a rigid shopper-style bike complete with newspaper rack on the back. Notax rode alongside for a friendly chat and to say 'well done' for tackling the climb, and it transpires that her hubby (already at the top) was a keen MTBer with three bikes to choose from! You would have thought he could have lent one of his bikes to her
I'm not interested in picking a fight about people being able to ride whatever they want (which they obviously are), but from our outsider perspective it seemed a little harsh for hubby to be blasting up the hill on one of his nice MTB's whilst his wife slogged up on a shopper! Goodness knows how she managed the jumpy bits
Anyway, take heed chaps, not the best way to get your wife into mountain biking....!
Heh when you do see couples out, does tend to be like that, in swinley the lady has the cheap hire bike and he has a half decent one. also get in the royal parks.0 -
Are you sure that the husband wasnt either extremely tall or extremely short? His 3 bikes might not have fitted her.0

They were absolutely flying0 -
My first wife mentioned she wanted to join me in my new activities-
I enrolled her in a cooking class
- she left me.
My second wife also described similar interests,
I bought her a Dyson,....
she also left me
My 3rd wife also expressed such interests, she got a Dyson and a cookery class and a diamond necklace....
sigh
Also left me,
they all expressed I had commitment issues.
I agree- I married my bikes.
Still going strong after 100 happy years.....Don't think, BE:0
