Riding the Brechfa blue trail at the weekend, and about 2/3rds of the way around we caught up with a lady we had seen leaving the car park riding with her hubby. She was clearly not having a particularly fun time on a fireroad climb, on a rigid shopper-style bike complete with newspaper rack on the back. Notax rode alongside for a friendly chat and to say 'well done' for tackling the climb, and it transpires that her hubby (already at the top) was a keen MTBer with three bikes to choose from! You would have thought he could have lent one of his bikes to her

I'm not interested in picking a fight about people being able to ride whatever they want (which they obviously are), but from our outsider perspective it seemed a little harsh for hubby to be blasting up the hill on one of his nice MTB's whilst his wife slogged up on a shopper! Goodness knows how she managed the jumpy bits

Anyway, take heed chaps, not the best way to get your wife into mountain biking....!

It was only after I got my second 'nice' bike the other week that my other half said, "I bet I'd enjoy mountain-biking." It all makes sense now :)

She was riding it like a lady who was a bit p!ssed off she was struggling on a shopper whilst her hubby has blasted up hill on his nice spangley mountain bike :lol:

Sounds curiously familiar apart from the 'blasted' bit :)

Surprisingly when I offered Zesty instead of red hardrock to my wife, she refused to have it on grounds that hydro brakes are too harsh compared to mechanical shimano BB5! Her hardrock looks mattered more, and she doesn't understand that -wangy- ride FS gives so bless her and others alike.

I want my wife to enjoy cycling and so I make sure she has the bike she wants and that the rides we do are enjoyable to her

I sort of did this.. I had my nice shiny carbon 456, and bought a cheapo '95 Kona from fleabay for the missus, to get her into biking. Took her out, it shook her ragged, poor thing. I offered the 456, but it was a bit big for her.

So, out of guilt, she now has a spangly Boardman Comp FI to blast around on.

Amazing what guilt can do to you!

Now all I need to do is actually get her to ride it!!

Ah, pleased to see you saw the error of your ways...!

I see you're in Hampshire - we (my group of riding buddies!) are thinking of organising a girlie-friendly day in the summer to get wives and girlfriends out on their bikes. I ride with the chaps each week but none of their partners ride with us. Nice off road trails, not too far, pub lunch, ice cream etc. Will probably post a date on here if your other half might be interested :D

@Miss Notax - I'll mention it to her, it could be right up her street! Wait, you said ice cream.. definitely up her street!

Would the fellas be invited too, or women only? I could be interested in riding with a group, most of my mates have become hermits, succumbed to fishing, or moved away. I think I smell or something..

Blimey.. I'm in Aldershot, so that's a bit of a trek for a night ride! (Plus, the o/h is quite new to mtb, so a night ride may be OTT at the moment!)

Cheers though, but something a bit closer to home might be easier for now! If you ever head to Surrey Hills/Swinley etc, let me know :)

Will do! Just to clarify, the girlie-ride will be during the day - no point eating ice cream in the dark

However, my GF is adamant that her Condor (Swiss utility bike, like a hybrid but stronger & heavier) is better than either my road bike or the Intense, so always rides that, no matter what we're doing. Makes me look like a pr***, riding my spangly bike while she toils away on hers, but hey, we're both stubborn, and she's marginally more stubborn than me. That said, I wouldn't go a trail centre with her while she still insists on riding it, but we do live in the Alps, so most rides involve a minimum of several hundred metres climbing....

Seen a similar thing at the Forest of Dean once, hubby on his nice shiny, £1500+ FS bike and poor wifey slogging along on her Apollo BSO FS with cable discs
I can imagine the conversation when he bought it for her: "well it has front and rear springs AND disc brakes too.. what else do you need? A lighter bike? Noways! Lose some weight and it will be lighter!"
  • i would be battered bruised and put in the dog house big time if i attempted that.lol.

shed rather meet me in the pub once im finished in all honesty though!

I keep offering to buy my wife a decent bike to encourage her to ride more, but sadly I think it's not going to happen... and that she's unlikely to go anywhere that her Specialized Expedition won't take her.

I did though stick some Nobby Nics on her bike (and some spare Nevegals on her buddy's) so the two of them could enjoy riding on the bridleways through the autumn... and my boys have enjoyed giving her bike related presents this christmas (computer, buff, bananaguard).

It's a similar story with kids... I retired a perfectly good Trek MT60 and replaced it with a Beinn 24 when I found that the Trek weighed as much as my Anthem. Now my 8 year old is nagging to be allowed to 'ride to grandmas' - 20 milles off road via the SDW... we may even achieve it this summer. Money well spent!

my GF hates riding any of my bikes because she almost gets booted over the bars whenever she bricks it at a steep section, so she sticks to her 10 year old townsend instead :D

My Mrs has one of those really expensive Townsend bikes, on average it has cost £50 per ride.

She bought it 18 years ago for £150 and she has used it 3 times...
