If you could only ride one bike, what would it be?

It's one of them controversial matters of taste. If I could only have one bike, it'd not be a rigid but it's nice to have the option. On a big bike at speed you just browse the trail, on a little bike you read every word. I like both. But I do enjoy your argument that riding a world cup dh route on an XC hardtail or innerleithen on a rigid is a sign of cowardice ;)

Anyway we have now succesfully derailed another thread into whether or not I'm a big poof for making trails harder than they need to be, so. OP, seek out a bike that's good enough to ride anything you'll want to ride but not so good that it makes half of what you ride easy. Something that's strong enough to survive but not so heavy as to be a burden. No I don't know what that'll be for you, it's different for everyone because everyone rides differently.

Look, I've ridden a rigid for years. It was shite. I'm never wrong. End of.

If I had some cash I'd get a 2010 Marin Mount Vision (I think, they seem to screw around with names). Perfect do anything not too heroic bike.
Looks better than the 2011 model. Marin don't seem to be fashionable at the moment, but I loved my old hardtail. Unbreakable.
Attack Trail was very nice, but probably a lot more bike than I would need or use.

 I've still got my 90s rigid mtb in the garage and it's proper not-fun utter shite, I use it as a commuter and even going over potholes feels like certain death. I will not be taking it up innerleithen. But the black one's just shite enough to be funny, while still having such revolutionary things as tyres that stick, brakes that stop you, wheels that don't bend in a strong wind, and geometry that works.

Mines from the 80's but has an awesome Girvin Flexstem, so small ripples in the road are ok.
Singletrack you need arms like Arnie for the brakes though.

But not moved it into the crudcatcher?
    hmm.

If I could have only one bike, I'd have the one I have now. I didn't pick it at random, I didn;t spec it at random. I chose it and upgraded as neccesary because it suits what I want from a bike perfectly.
(well, ok, the reason I went for the lower end wolfridge is only partially because I was going to change cranks and forks anwyay, and mostly because it was black and had green brakes, but still)

Ah good, thought it was me being a cretin

Righto if I can only have one bike it's the one I have but better. Lets have some Easton carbon havens to replace the Flows and the carbon haven bars (or maybe Havoc, haven't decided) to replace the protapers, set of BOS Devilles for the Lyriks, a Reverb for the KS. And that's about it I guess, it's pretty bloody good already

I'd keep the zaskar team, but have a 100-130mm air uturn fork. Is light, but pretty tough, suits the majority of my riding, and is not just aimed at xc. I love the surge forward of the stiff frame and weight.
  • I would actually have to say either my current bike, or something similar. I would need some tweaks done to get EXACTLY what I want from the bike, but after that it would be awesome. Bike is built like a tank, rides very well, forks can be adjusted down to 120mm from 160mm, and lockout front and rear. When I want to go up the hill, i'm comfortable, and way back down as well.
Don't care too much about brands of parts, just that it does what I want it to, when I want it to.

Predictable I know, but if I could only have one bike, it would be my Edison. 29lbs, 6 inch adjustable travel and variable geometry, low maintenance and bombproof. Not really anything more I could ask for in a bike.

I only have one bike and it’s a rigid Marin from the 90’s but I’m having fun so don’t care what anyone else think.
But then if I could get my leg over a young bouncy model I would. I’m sure the misses will come round to the idea soon.

    If only one.

    Hmmmnnn.

    120mm at the back
140-150mm at the front with a 20mm axle
(geometry designed to cope with the 'mismatch')

around 28-30lb but tough enough to cope with my hamfistedness.

    1x9 (34T/11-34 out back)

drivetrain and cockpit bits from my current bike(s)

    not sure about wheels...

    black.

    slainte :D rob

I would happily exchange my bike for one decent trail right now! I'd swap the frame for a few large berms, the wheels for a long rock garden, the brakes for a really nice elevation and steep gradient, the controls for twisting singletrack...

Then I'd do the whole thing on something I stole out of a skip.

All well and good having the perfect bike... but the perfect trails are at least two hours away :(

    This

I've spent a load of time and money building and tweaking my bike to suit me, so I wouldn’t be looking to ride another if I wasn’t allowed more than one (which im not)

Just sell a kidney or the mrs and get one!! It's a superb frame, easily the best bike I've ever ridden, I just wish they did it in the nuclear green they do the SL in, then as a frame it would be perfect, but that's being really picky as I love the clear carbon I have, but if I had to have one bike and money was even less of an object, I'd have it in said nuclear green, chris king headset and bb, industry 9 wheels, full trail xtr, formula brakes and the dropper post fox are going to produce, but otherwise I'd keep the kcnc stuff and the fox floats I have, but I'd get them tuned as frankly as off yet I haven't got them feeling as perfect as I'd like, but they're still great. Damn now I'm thinking about the colour of the frame...

You know what would look cool on the mojo? A translucent mettalic green, so you could still see the carbon underneath.
