From everyone I ask about it, it's apparently overrated and they just think it's another cafe.

Actually that's a lie, some people I know rave about it.

Rob, can you tell me which issue that will be printed in, please. I'd like to buy it.

  • It'll be in issue 249. The new look Cycling Plus...still no testimonials though! Not sure Freehub's will make it in! :D

So, if you do like it let me know why...

So the unbiased review is looking only for good testimonials? Or have I read this wrongly?

I've never heard of the cafe, nor know where it is so I can't tell if it deserves rave reviews or not.

I've planned a ride out there a couple of times to see what the fuss is about but the ride would take me mainly along main roads. Whereas I can go to many cycle friendly cafes in the peaks that are great, the ride there and back is great and the scenery stunning.

Rob - over 400 views and not one +, so far. I think for the price of their 'cake of choice' and a few double espressos, you should send a few local 'Cakestoppers' to the cafe and publish their review, then we can all make our own minds up.

Could you also do us all a favour and make sure Will is one of them, and gets fed. That'll stop the little f*cker coming on here and whittering on about where to get cheap food for a while!

  • Mmm...yes I should have worded my request betterer - good job I'm not a journalist...oh hold on.

If it's genuinely not a cakestop of choice – and we have heard good things – then it isn't going in the mag...Thought that as it calls itself 'Cyclists Cafe' it must be good and would be a good place to kick off! But what I do want from you are your favourite cakestops - I'll need a picture, preferably with some riders enjoying cake, why it's so good and what the cake du jour is?

Hope that's clearer and put away your popcorn....

I'm a regular at Eureka, and have been for many years. They're known for excellent home made soups, friendly welcome (they make an effort to remember as many names as possible). It's a meeting point for many clubs in the area. Steve Cummings, Nick Craig, Rebecca Romero drop in from time to time, I haven't seen Chris Boardman in there for a while, though his dad is never out of the place!

Everyone? Really? Not one person said anything different?

One of the down sides is the location, it's positioned at a very busy and fast junction, but I do know that the cafe owners are lobbying hard to get something done (traffic calming etc). But once you're away from the immediate vicinity, you're on great roads. IT's a great hub for rides into Wales from Wirral.

They are now open more often, too, as from February this year they are also open on Thursday and Friday, you can follow them on Twitter @eureka_cafe Some have even taken to tweeting their food orders from a few miles out, they'll do it if they know your username :)

It's a great cafe with a thriving customer base, always someone to chat to and have a few laughs.
  • But Dodgy what's the best cake!

    Soup cake.

Hehe, I'm not a big cake lover, but the staff will always recommend their current fave based on what people are eating lots of. The millionaire shortbread is good (you know, caramel and shortcrust and chocolate).

Damn and I thought I actually was gonna make it into Cycling Plus :(

I can tell you the Manchester Wheelers needed 3 attempts to get to the cafe, I think they might have succeeded on the 3rd.

Will, I'll willingly send you a tenner just so you can go there and then post your informative review on here. Rob might put you in CP as a result (obviously it'll have to be a positive review or he won't   ) A photo would be nice as well. :D

I've seen the Manchester Wheelers in there many a time.
  • The Eureka is brilliantly eccentric and it's the focus on cycling which makes is so special.

There are plenty of great cafes which are cycling friendly - but true cyclists cafe are few and far between. You can call in at a place in the wilds of nowhere, which may have a bike rack and other cyclists there, but there will still be plenty of families sitting at tables wondering why they've been invaded by damp people in bright lycra. But stop at the Eureka and everyone is 'one of us' and it's the occasional visiting civilian in ordinary clothes which gets a bit of a look.

Cycling is all about tradition and history - we read about old races, we revere old bikes and we spend a lot of money on jerseys which looks just like the moth eaten ones in the back of our dad's shed. So going somewhere which has had cyclists visiting for decades - including some of the great names of the North West - makes you part of that history as well. And it's an ongoing history - one of the fun games to play is to watch for the skinny teenagers arriving with some of the Birkenhead's faster groups and wondering if he's going to be someone you'll be cheering on from your sofa in ten years' time.

We like to break a ride at the Eureka - living in Chester it's almost a perfect distance away - in the winter we can cruise out for tea and a cake on cold mornings and in the summer you can call in after a loop of serious North Wales hills. And, despite not being that regular, they always remember that my wife doesn't like butter on her toasted sandwich!
