New Fitness App Ideas? – Free Kit for Good Responses

I am beginning to develop a phone app aimed at the fitness market, which will help users to maintain, improve and measure their fitness. It will take data from a wireless heart rate monitor (chest strap), the phone’s GPS sensor and from user input (e.g. weight).

Of course this can already be done (e.g. Runkeeper, CardioTrainer, iFitness) and the app will include all of the features and analysis present in these apps. However, I am also looking to include novel features that are not available elsewhere – which is where you can help!

What I would like to know is the kind of novel features that you would find useful in such an app. Are there things like VO2max and EPOC which could be calculated and which you would find useful? I have access to expertise in signal analysis and machine learning – is there any information that might be extracted from the sensor data which you might find useful, e.g. breathing rate, a measure of the user’s level of fitness (e.g. Conconi test), a measure of when exercise intensity is too high?

Thanks for your time – when (if!) the product comes to market I will send each of you who provides useful feedback with a free sensor/app as an expression of my gratitude.
Thanks very much,
Tom

  • Not so much the top layer of functionality of an app, but I'd love one that syncs automatically with a cloud/web based account. Something that would let me log on to a website, review recorded rides with all the associated data, and plot and plan new rides. Ideally then that the app could navigate me round through the headphones.
  • Also the ability to share your routes and data with other users which could be useful for clubs etc.
Might also be useful to riders for them to pick a previous workout and while riding that route again have constant feedback through the app, things like you are ahead by so much or behind or doing a better average etc.

You could have A KOM system like Strava, which although isn't pioneering, can be alterd so it's not how fast you go up, but how fast you go down. If you don't understand what I'm saying I'll explain. This helps you push yourself. Liek their are a couple of guys within my club, who I'm playing ping pong with, going up certain climbs. Also you could have estimated average power for the ride. Now all the die hard SRM, Quarq and Powertap guys, are suddenly about to log off training peaks and garmin connect, and blast me for saying this, but it provides an amateur, or someone on a budget with a way of estimating power. This could easily be worked out by, using the average gradient for the ride and the average speed. OKAY, calm down other variables, like wind aren't taken into account, but like I said it is an average. You could also allow Gpx export from other gpx recording items.
