  • I was quite impressed with how the GD came with a selection of self adhesive clips to attach to the frame. Made my life much easier.

As for tubeless, I keep meaning to give it a try. Not so sure though. My thick tubes come in at a combined 600g, and they are REALLY thick. If I was to go tubeless, I'd either need rimstrips + sealant with my current tyres, or special (heavier) tubeless tyres with yellow tape and cores. Either way, I think the weight saving would be nothing. and as I dont run silly low pressures, the pinch flat thing is not an issue.

    2 x nobbynics tubeless 695grams each £58 a pair from merlin
    2 x ust valves £11.90 merlin
    2 x 60ml bottles of stans fluid £5.98 winstanleys
    specialized roval tape £9.99 tredz
    total weight
    approx 1530grams

    your current set up
    fat alberts snakeskins 800ish
    tubes 600 for 2
    rim tape 30ish
total approx 2430grams (very rough guess at tyre fitted)
that roughly 2lbs of rotating weight save which is huge. as the noobys are proper ust tyres they are much tougher than their tubeless ready counter parts and hold air a lot better too, then you have the awesome puncture proofing that ust gives you, save for big rips. £86 for a 2lb weight saving and the tubeless advantages listed is not bad at all and your bike will feel hell of a lot more lively for it too.

  • Nah, I'm not running Fat Albert SS on this one. Got regular Albert 2.25 about 650g each (wired version) iirc.

Still a saving of about 1lb though (at the wheel, where it matters), assuming your weights are correct (no reason to dobt you btw). Which is not too shabby really.

How do you get £58 a pair from Merlin though? When I do it, it's £64.80, and that's with my VIP discount thing.

Also, would I not then need to go buy a track pump and Co2 pump too?

got my ks i950 dropper post today. it fits perfectly, thought it would be to long but with it inserted in the frame as far as it will go when fully extended it is the exact height i run my saddle at. its nice and light too at just under 500grams so if i run it with my flight slr saddle it will weigh a combined 640grams as opposed to the charge spoon ti/raceface deus combo which weighs 500grams. so im only gaining 140grams which aint too bad. still waiting on my wheels and i need to order the remote lever for my post. also fitting a much lighter bash guard. the bike weighed bang on 26lbs in the first pic on this thread, with all the changes it should weigh 28lbs give or take a few grams. not bad considering the strength of the wheels plus the dropper post and full ust tyres. should be nice do it all bike if i like the nobby nics i may fit the tubeless ready version, that will save a pound.

tried my ks i950 post around llandegla on sun and i was astounded how much of an improvement it was over my old ksi900. not only much lighter but the action was a lot lighter too. it didnt hesitate or struggle at all, i reckon the fact it has a more inline clamp helps alot. ive got a remote lever on its way and ive devised a trick way of routing the cable cleanly also. on the same ride i also snapped a spoke on my roval traversees  good job my new wheels are due to arrive this week. gonna fix the rovals and stick them on the p7. along with the bits above and the new bash and chainring bolts im putting on the bike should look a lot better and take loads more abuse. looking at cwnt's bionicon the flow rims give the nobby nics a good profile.

I did the same with the i950 on my trance, first ride out decided I needed the remote for it :D

Interested to see if you find a better way of routing the cable, although mine seems fine cable tied to the front mech cable.

ive utilised a flexible v-brake noodle to direct the cable out of harms way and afork hose guide to stop any paint damage. also using a length of yokozuna brake cable out fitted with a middleburn cable oiler although i have a load of alligator i links in different colours so i may experiment. will put the pics up when done. ordered the remote from wiggle last night for £40.

ok my latest upgrading splurge is complete. got my new wheels on, superstar red switch evo's sapim race black db spokes, stans flow rims fitted with15mm front and 10mm thru rear axles and ust noby nic 2.25" tyres. also fitted a pair of alligator sunflower rotors and red mowa rotor bolts and a superstar 10mm thru axle qr in gold. ive fitted a gold ceramic jockey to the rear mech and put a xtr m970 11/32 cassette on. to the chainset ive fitted a shaman racing carbon fibre bashguard and some red kcnc chainring bolts. i have fitted a ks cobra i950 dropper post with remote control lever. i made my own cable up for the remote using a caramba v-brake pulley on the lever end to get rid of the big loop, the actual cable is some yokozuna brake outer i had left over. i also fitted a middleburn cable oiler and an inline cable adjuster. i finised it off with some blue ano uvex ferrules. it works superbly. only thing i may change now is the forks. total bike weight is now a smidgen over 28lbs which is not bad considering the hardcore wheels and dropper post in place. i fancy trying some 140mm revelations upfront, i'll see how the fox's go.

took it round llandegla today with the new spec and all i can say is wow. the bike truly feels like it can handle anything. wheels felt light and lively the tyres were superb in the dry conditions and the seatpost remote made a huge difference. i was going to build a lightweight long travel ti hardtail but after riding the trance im going to stay full sus. ive got my sights on a ibis mojo sl with a pair of light 140mm revelations. gonna stick with xtr gearing and may try some formula r1's. i also want to save up hard and try some easton carbon haven wheels and finishing kit. a trip to the states may be in order methinks.

  • Looking good. Glad you're happy with the wheels. Are your hubs as quiet as mine. They're damned near silent.

You coming to 'degla again on Friday 13th May?
Me and Richie are heading over that way after a few days riding over here (might be heading to Delamere same day too apparently).

decided to try the trance with a set of freshly ordered rockshox revs 140mm rlt's, apparently 140mm forks transform the trance X into a much better bike so i will give it a go. i may also fit a lighter stem and a better headset whilst im at it. pics to follow

forks are fitted and looking nice, just waiting for my 9mm thru axle qr and hub converters. decided to go with the 9mm thru axle option as i got a good deal on a set of normal qr revs. used a 9mm thru axle qr before and would say that i couldnt really detect any difference between it and 15mm thru axles. also got a lighter 65mm stem on its way, trying one of the new red ano am stems from superstar, i love the x-lite stem i have fitted but at 285 grams its a fair old lump. with the new forks and stem it will take over 1/2 a pound off my bike. just hoping my hub bits turn up on sat so i can ride on sun although i could use my old roval front wheel if needed.

thankyou but if you wait a month or two i will make a right pigs ear of it by adding way too much anodised componentry so it will end up looking like a tin full of empty sweet wrappers.

they seem amazing for the price, early days but the signs are good. spares are also cheap and easy to come by.

I'll second this opinion. Mine are now insanely loud too.

Shame about the iffy build quality on pastey_boys wheels, mine are spot-on.

ok i have the new forks and stem fitted. bike now weighs 27.5lbs which is great considering the build. not had a chance to ride it yet but the front end looks like it will take a lot more once i get the forks set up right. the superstar stem looks a nice piece of kit for the price and the 9mm thru axle converters were a breeze to swap. hopefully off to whinlatter tomorrow to test the new bits :D

first ride with the new forks was a success, they felt a lot more supple than the fox's and had a nice bottomless feel to them. still need to play around with the pressures and rebound a bit but i could attack more with them in place. the superstar stem shocked me , felt totally solid which is good for a 140 gram item that only cost me £27, i am going to flip it over though to bring the front end down a tiny bit. i can now confidently say that there is nothing i am unhappy about on the bike, everything works perfectly, i can fly downhill and climb easily, the brakes and shifting are amazing and the ks i950 is proving to be a solid performer. only thing i am going to change are the brakes pads to superstar kevlars as i had a set in my hopes and they were awesome. i honestly cant think of anymore upgrades which depresses me as i will now have to waste my money on other things. my road bike is finished too so i guess i need to start saving for my mojo build :D

hey Pastey_boy, I have a 140mm HT at moment and was looking at buying a trance frame as I heard that they could run a 140mm fork. Whats your overall verdict? I really like the trace frame
  • pastey_boy
    pastey_boy Posts: 2,083
i found the trance good with 120's but even better with the 140's. bikeradar say the trance has issues with a low bottom bracket but i have found no evidence of this, the 140's will lift it a bit and large volume tyres have also increased ground clearance, but it was ok with the 120 forks. i also brought the front end down a bit and fitted a shorter stem and find the bike can handle anything from steep climbs to quick downhills. the rear really does feel bottomless and it feels more like a 6 or 7 inch bike ,obviously its going to find its limitations on very steep rocky stuff but as a do it all bike i cant fault it. can be built prtty light too, before i fitted the dropper post and hardcore wheels and tyres it weighed in at 26lbs, if the revelations were fitted it would have been heading towards the 25-1/2 mark. like i say ,put a zero degree rise stem on it and do away with the big conical spacer under it along with fitting a 60-75mm stem and you will have a nice bike that will have a go at anything.

just replaced the standard xtr rear mech with a shadow one because the pimpy carbon cage looks nice, also added a fancy gold titanium aheadset topcap and a moulded carbon downtube protector, got it off some bloke on ebay and i have to say its a superb piece of kit, it just snapped into place and feels solid. depending on how bored i get this afternoon i may replace all my cables inc gears, seatpost remote and fork remote as i have a 5hitload of gold i-link cable lying about looking for a home. i may remove the poploc remote altogether as i dont think i will ever use it.
