I have been commuting since July last year but have taken riding more seriously this year. I'm currently training for the Cheshire Cat this month. Last night I set off on a 35 mile route with a fair few steep hills. One of the hills in particular is 1.6 miles long and averages about 12% and a few sections at 18%.

I did this route in January and again yesterday and for this section of the route, my cadence and speed where identical to the first route but my average heart rate was 13bpm lower.

My average speed also has increased by a good 2-3mph since January too. Im a happy man. Bring on more steep stuff!
